Chapter 93 - The Heir of Tartarus

My boots hit the steel grated floor of the hangar bay. Four rifle barrels instantly tracked my chest. Clara was hauled out behind me by two ruthless guards, dropping to her knees on the cold deck plates, coughing violently as the dry air burned her lungs.

Standing twenty feet away, flanked by heavily armed mercenaries, was a man whose silhouette immediately struck a chord of unnatural familiarity. He wore an immaculate slate-gray officer’s tunic devoid of any insignia. As he stepped out from the vapor of the venting ballast lines, his features became distinct under the industrial lights.

He had the sharp jawline, high cheekbones, and ice-blue eyes of the Vance bloodline.

"Julian," I said, the name tasting like ash on my tongue.

My eldest half-brother—the one my father claimed had drowned in a yachting accident off Monterey eight years ago—smiled thinly. It was a cold, calculating expression completely devoid of humanity.

"In the flesh, little brother," Julian said smoothly, stepping forward with deliberate, measured strides. "I must say, I never expected Arthur's petty domestic greed to draw someone of your tactical competence into our perimeter. Lake Tahoe was supposed to be a quiet laundering hub, an isolated mountain bastion where our communication nodes could operate under the radar of Fleet Intelligence. Instead, you turned it into a warzone."

Clara stared up at him, her eyes wide with shock, her mouth parting as comprehension shattered her fragile reality. "Julian? You're alive? But... Father said... the trust fund, the insurance payout..."

Julian didn't even look down at her. He waved a dismissive hand, as if swatting away an annoying insect. "Arthur was an idiot, Clara. A vain, desperate old man blinded by a few million dollars in stolen real estate. He genuinely believed he was setting you up in luxury. He never understood that the Whispering Pines estate sat directly above the primary fiber-optic trunk line connecting the Sierra defense grid to the coast."

"You used us," Clara whispered, her voice cracking as tears cut lines through the grime on her face. "You let Father tear our family apart... for a conduit?"

"I used resources that were readily available," Julian corrected coldly, finally turning his predatory gaze toward me. "Now, Marcus. The drive you pulled from the seismic warhead. Hand it over, or I execute her right here, and then I take it from your corpse."
