Chapter 55 - The Family Syndicate Exposed

Three hours later, inside the secure briefing room aboard the USS *Spruance*, the puzzle pieces fell into place with devastating precision.
I sat with my arm bound in a tight tactical sling, an IV line dripping saline into my vein. Spread out across the illuminated digital conference table were satellite maps of Lake Tahoe, financial forensic ledgers, and classified personnel files bearing top-secret naval clearance stamps.
Miller pulled up an encrypted file recovered from the telemetry records of Tartarus before it sank.
"Victor didn't just stage his death," Miller explained, zooming in on an intricate web of offshore shell corporations. "He built a parallel syndicate using deactivated Cold War naval logistics lines. For five years, he’s been brokering classified undersea surveillance routes to foreign maritime syndicates. But he had a glaring problem."
"Whispering Pines," I said, my voice cold as flint.
"Precisely," Miller nodded grimly. "The land the villa sits on was acquired by your grandfather in the 1960s under a civilian cover program. Beneath that boathouse is an active hardened subterranean terminal that taps into the Navy's trans-Sierra fiber backbone. Victor couldn't access it legally without raising red flags inside Fleet Cyber Command. So he used your family."
A wave of bitter disgust washed over me.
"They played the victims," I muttered, recalling the tear-stained phone calls from my father over the last three years. The relentless demands for money. The 'dire emergencies' and 'foreclosure notices' that had prompted me to wire $110,000 of my hazardous-duty pay while I was deployed in hostile waters. "They squeezed me dry to maintain the property until they could legally seize title."
"Arthur was promised thirty million dollars once the property was transferred and the underground server cleared out," Miller confirmed. "Clara was promised the deed to the main house and total financial independence. All they had to do was forge your power of attorney, lock you out of the title, and let Victor's technical team work inside the reinforced basement."
"And when I returned early from my twenty-one-day mission..."
"You walked straight into their extraction window," Miller said. "They expected you to roll over, or at worst, get tied up in civilian probate court for years while they finished siphoning the data. Instead, you called in Fleet Command, seized the house, and chased their trail straight to Tartarus."

A naval intelligence officer entered the room and snapped to attention. "Commander Miller. Federal marshals have raided the safehouses in Reno. But there's a development. Clara Vance has requested an immediate proffer. She knows Victor is alive, and she’s terrified."
I stood up, ignoring the flare of pain in my shoulder. "Take me to her."
