Chapter 181 - The Phantom Executor

I climbed the stone steps back up to the shattered terrace of Whispering Pines. Federal agents were already bagging Victor's forged paperwork, the electronic drives, and the biometric decryption hardware.
Arthur was standing by the stone hearth near the fractured terrace window, a ruggedized military laptop open on the outdoor granite table. His trench coat was collar-up against the mountain wind, his face illuminated by the blue glow of decrypted financial streams.
"Marcus," Arthur said, his tone unusually grim as I walked up, drying my hair with a towel Miller had handed me. "You stopped the tectonic charge, but you need to see what Victor was actually downloading before you tackled him."
"The offshore bond?" I asked. "The $110,000,000 he tried to route through my military ID?"
"It wasn't just a bond," Arthur said, turning the screen toward me. "Look at the routing structure. Victor and Clara weren't the architects of this offshore syndicate. They were mid-level cutouts. Disposable assets."
I leaned over the screen, my eyes tracing the financial lines.
The $110,000 I had sent home over three years hadn't just paid for their luxury lifestyle; it had been used by an external shell corporation to establish identity verification protocols inside the naval logistics network. Every dollar had been logged as a sovereign retainer for an offshore entity named *Aegis-Cascadia*.
And the primary beneficiary authorized to liquidate the trust wasn't Victor Vance.
"There's a third name on the deed," Arthur whispered. "Someone who held power of attorney over the entire Vance estate dating back twenty-five years—long before you joined the Navy."
My eyes locked onto the digital signature at the bottom of the encrypted ledger.
Before I could read the name aloud, a piercing static scream erupted from every military radio on the terrace.
The pilots in the Black Hawks suddenly sat upright, their instrument panels flashing yellow alert indicators.
*"Command, this is Hawk-One!"* the pilot's voice barked over the open loudspeaker. *"We have an unidentified radar track descending through the cloud deck directly over Mount Tallac! No transponder, Mach 2.4, diving straight toward Emerald Bay!"*
Simultaneously, the tactical comms console on Arthur’s laptop buzzed with an incoming high-priority emergency transmission from the federal transport carrying Victor Vance.
The audio cracked through the speaker, accompanied by the violent chatter of automatic gunfire and screams:
*"Ambush on Highway 50! Transport under attack by heavy armor! They aren't trying to rescue the Admiral—they're executing him! I repeat, they are—"*

The line went dead with a deafening blast of static.
Above us, the night clouds over Lake Tahoe parted, and the low, thunderous roar of an incoming supersonic aircraft shook the very foundations of Whispering Pines.
