Chapter 26 - Clara's Hidden Archive

The data streaming from Clara’s drive painted a chilling portrait of betrayal that stretched far beyond my broken family.
For seven years, Clara had served as the sole terrestrial gatekeeper for the Navy’s underwater listening array, code-named Deep Pine. The facility was designed to be virtually invisible—operating out of an automated, subterranean intake cavern excavated directly beneath my boathouse's foundation in the 1960s. The property was titled to me precisely because my active-duty clearance and operational deployments provided the perfect cover for a secure, unattended naval asset.
Then came the commercial interest. Vanguard Maritime had secured a multi-million-dollar Department of the Interior contract to map Tahoe’s submerged canyons for ecological conservation. But under that harmless cover, they were using deep-water mining drones to prospect for rare-earth mineral veins locked beneath the state park boundaries—an operation entirely illegal under federal environmental treaties.
Clara had caught them on Deep Pine’s hydrophones.
When she threatened to deliver the logs to Fleet Command, Vanguard looked for an angle to neutralize her. They found it in my estranged family.
My sister Julianne’s endless social media complaints about her student debts, my father’s bitter resentment over my financial independence—Vanguard’s corporate operatives had monitored their digital footprints. An anonymous tip, a fabricated deed loophole provided by an attorney paid through Vanguard shell corporations, and a cash advance disguised as an unsecured loan had set my father into motion. They knew that once my family illegally occupied Whispering Pines, local jurisdiction would take over, naval security protocols would be tangled in civil eviction proceedings, and Clara would be forced off-site.
They had used my own blood as a disposable battering ram.
I disconnected the drive, securing it inside my tactical vest. My phone, operating on a hardened satellite uplink, vibrated against my chest. It was an encrypted text from Master Chief Miller:

*Commander. State Police just intercepted a high-speed convoy heading toward the Tahoe north rim. It’s Vanguard's regional security director. They’re attempting to scuttle their offshore platform and extract their personnel before we can mobilize a federal interdiction.*
I keyed the microphone on my satellite handset. "Miller. Hold the perimeter at the villa. I’m taking the submersible. I'm going to intercept the Avalon myself."
