Chapter 103 - Rescue in the Black Abyss

The water in the chamber was ice. Hypothermia was already setting in, stiffening my fingers and turning my lips numb, when a loud, metallic clank echoed from the outer hull above my head.
It was the unmistakable ring of a pressurized docking skirt.
The United States Navy didn’t leave its own behind, especially not when a black-budget submarine filled with illicit cartel technology was breaking apart on the continental shelf. Through the thick steel overhead, I heard the hiss of hydraulic equalizers matching pressure with the escape chamber. A circular hatch whined open, exposing a floodlit shaft of clean, dry air.
"Navy divers, clear the hatch!" a deep voice barked down the tube.
Two figures in high-altitude diving rigs and tactical drysuits peered down into the lockout chamber. One of them lowered a heavy nylon extraction harness.
"You Marcus?" the lead diver demanded, his faceplate obscured by red interior lights.
"Master Chief Marcus Vance," I rasped, my throat raw from saltwater and smoke. "Get me out of this tin can before the reactor compartment implodes."
"Grab the line, Master Chief. We’ve got you."
They winched me up into the lower staging airlock of an Advanced SEAL Delivery Vehicle (ASDV) mated to the upper deck of the USS *Hampton*. The transition from the freezing, toxic soup of the sinking rogue submarine into the sterile, humming warmth of the naval craft was disorienting. As soon as the lower hatch slammed shut and the pumps cleared the residual water, two corpsmen descended on me, cutting away my shredded tactical vest and wrapping my trembling frame in thermal shock blankets.
"Vital signs are erratic, but he’s stable," one medic called out. "Core temperature ninety-three degrees. No signs of arterial bends."
I pushed the oxygen mask away from my mouth, gripping the sleeve of the ASDV commander. "The escape pod. A titanium four-man capsule ejected thirty seconds before your first active ping. Did you track it?"
The commander exchanged a grim look with his co-pilot. "We tracked the acoustic signature on launch, Master Chief. But it didn't drift toward the surface."
"What do you mean?"
"Someone was waiting for it," the officer said, tapping his tactical console. "An unflagged semi-submersible platform, operating with acoustic-dampening cloaking tiles, snagged the capsule via tether at eight hundred feet. By the time the *Hampton* got a firing solution, they were already running silent toward the Mendocino Ridge."

My jaw tightened until the bone ached. Clara hadn't just fled—she had an extraction corridor pre-planned by whatever syndicate network had orchestrated the theft of my estate and the subversion of my family.
"Take me to your CO," I growled, struggling to sit up against the medic's protests. "I have the encryption keys they used to bypass Tahoe’s naval surveillance grid. And I know exactly where that platform is heading."
