Chapter 150 - The Abyssal Command Deck

Darkness. Smoke. The deafening hiss of high-pressure steam.

I coughed violently, spitting blood onto the canted aluminum plating of the overturned helicopter. My ribs screamed in protest, every nerve ending firing in agonizing sync, but my training overrode the pain.

I checked Clara. She was bruised, bleeding from a superficial cut across her forehead, but alive, weeping silently in shock.

"Move," I ordered, dragging her through the smashed emergency exit hatch of the helicopter.

We tumbled out onto the wet, anechoic deck of *Leviathan-01*. The frigid alpine spray whipped across our faces. All around us, the black steel stretched for hundreds of feet into the mountain mist. Lake Tahoe was boiling around the vessel's hull as the colossal ballast system began a terrifying reversal.

The submarine wasn't staying on the surface. It was diving.

"The airlocks are sealing!" I shouted over the roar of rushing water.

Fifty feet forward, a heavy hydraulic hatch leading down into the pressure hull was slowly descending, warning klaxons pulsing in rhythm with yellow strobe lights.

I hauled Clara to her feet and shoved her forward across the slick titanium surface. We sprinted against the rising waterline that was already washing over the outer deck plates. The icy water hit my combat boots, then my knees, threatening to drag us both into the abyssal depths of the trench.

With a desperate leap, I threw Clara down through the open hatchway, tumbling in after her just as the heavy, multi-lugged steel ring engaged.

*CLANG.*

The hatch sealed with an airtight, pneumatic hiss that cut off the roar of the lake completely.

We tumbled down a metal companionway, crashing onto the grated steel deck of the primary command bridge. The air was sterile, cold, smelling of lithium hydroxide scrubbers and ancient, sealed electronics.

The command deck was massive, far larger than any standard Navy attack sub. Tiered tactical stations rose around a central holographic plotting table that was flickering to life with deep-sea navigational charts of the Cascadia subduction zone and the Pacific Rim.

On the main forward display screen, a familiar face flickered into high-definition clarity.

Eleanor.

She was not on a degraded emergency channel anymore. She was sitting in a high-tech naval operations room, clad in the pristine dress blue uniform of a retired Fleet Admiral, a cold, calculating smile playing on her lips.

"Welcome aboard *Leviathan-01*, Marcus," her recorded voice echoed through the bridge's surround sound speakers. "If you are hearing this, Whispering Pines has fulfilled its final operational objective. The foundation is buried, the surveillance net is blind, and my ship is finally in the hands of the only son worthy to command it."
