Chapter 57 - Operation Alpine Shadow

The storm that had battered the California coastline swept inland, dumping sheets of freezing rain and heavy sleet across the Tahoe basin.

Whispering Pines looked like an armed fortress in the twilight. Navy security details in full tactical gear guarded the perimeter, while federal technical teams worked around the clock in the basement beneath the boathouse, severing the illicit taps Victor's crew had spliced into the military trunkline.

I stood on the edge of my granite pier, the icy lake lapping against the stone.

"Radar confirms the vessel," Miller said, stepping up beside me, holding a ruggedized tactical tablet. "A two-hundred-foot luxury exploration yacht registered to a Panamanian front company. She’s anchored two miles off Emerald Bay under the guise of private bathymetric research. Thermal imaging shows heavy power consumption. Victor is burning the physical drives."

"He's destroying the evidence," I noted, checking the slide on my suppressed Sig Sauer P226. "And once the drives are melted, he slips out into the Tahoe backcountry via helicopter before local authorities even realize who was on board."

"Local authorities aren't handling this," Miller replied with a grim smile. "This is an active counter-espionage strike. Fleet Command authorized Special Boat Unit Twenty-Two. We have three stealth combat craft waiting at the North Shore marina."

"I’m leading the boarding team," I stated.

Miller looked at my bandaged shoulder. "You're wounded, Marcus. You took a bullet and survived an explosive decompression dive within the last twelve hours."

"That man stole my family's honor, stole five years of my life, and used my own father to steal everything I built," I said, meeting Miller’s gaze with absolute resolve. "I am stepping onto that yacht first."

Miller held my gaze for a long moment, then reached out and tapped my good shoulder. "Wheels up in ten minutes. Let's go take back what’s yours."
