Chapter 1 - I had always imagined my wedding day would be the happiest moment of my entire life.

I was wrong.

Everything turned into a nightmare when the doors of Manhattan’s Grand Bellemont Hotel opened and my younger sister Vanessa stepped into view at the top of the marble staircase… dressed in my wedding gown.

Not one that looked like mine. Not some duplicate.

My real custom ivory ball gown—the one I had spent eleven months creating.

Thousands of crystals glittered beneath the chandeliers. Delicate silver embroidery covered the corseted waist, while the cathedral-length train trailed behind her as almost 300 guests stared at her in shock.

Only four hours earlier, that dress had gone missing from my bridal suite.

Now Vanessa was making her way toward the altar like she was the woman getting married.

Guests immediately pulled out their phones. Vanessa smiled. She had always been talented at making herself the center of attention.

Even my fiancé Adrian stood there looking stunned.

My mother rushed across the room toward her.

“Vanessa! What are you doing?”

Vanessa raised the glittering skirt slightly and replied in a calm voice, “I thought somebody ought to wear it.”

The guests let out awkward, nervous laughter.

I stayed silent.

Because I knew this wasn’t some innocent surprise.

Vanessa had competed with me for as long as I could remember. Anytime the spotlight landed on me, she found a way to redirect it back onto herself.

Three weeks before my wedding, she had asked if she could try on my dress.

I told her no.

She accused me of being selfish. My mother told me I was acting dramatic.

But six months before that, I had discovered something they had no idea I knew about.

Vanessa had contacted my designer behind my back, asking for my measurements, details about the fabric, photographs of the construction process, and information about the silver embroidery.

That was when I understood she was never planning to simply show up at my wedding and behave.

So I made preparations of my own.

By the time Vanessa reached the bottom step, she looked at me with a smile.

“Surprised?”

Adrian took a step toward her. “Vanessa, take it off.”

She turned toward the crowd and said, “My sister has always gotten everything first. The career. The apartment. The perfect man. The perfect wedding.”

Then her eyes locked onto mine.

“So tonight, I wanted one thing she could never take back.”

She was waiting for me to break down.

She thought I would run from the room.

Instead, I smiled back.

“Actually,” I said, “I’m glad you’re wearing it.”

At that exact moment, the lights inside the ballroom dimmed.

Security footage appeared on the huge screen behind the altar, clearly showing Vanessa walking into my bridal suite and taking the gown.

Then the audio played, revealing a conversation that proved she hadn’t done it by herself.

My mother’s face lost all its color.

Vanessa lowered her voice. “You recorded us?”

I stared at her.

“No,” I said. “You recorded yourselves.”

Then my hand moved behind my waist.

For the first time, Vanessa’s confidence cracked.

Because she believed the dress I was wearing was only my backup gown.

It wasn’t.

Click.

Click.

The hidden clasps released.

The champagne overskirt dropped away, exposing another extraordinary ivory gown beneath it—decorated with the very same silver embroidery.

A chorus of gasps swept through the ballroom.

I reached for the microphone.

“You didn’t steal my wedding dress, Vanessa.”

Then the screen behind me changed again.

This time, an old document appeared.

My late father’s signature could clearly be seen at the bottom.

My mother whispered, “Turn off that screen.”

I looked toward her and answered, “No.”

Because sewn inside the embroidery around my waist was something my mother had believed was gone forever twenty-eight years ago.

I carefully reached into the concealed pocket and removed the folded document.

Vanessa stared at my father’s signature.

“Mom… what did you do?”

Nearly 300 people watched without making a sound as I started unfolding the document that would finally explain why my father had made two almost identical wedding gowns—and what Vanessa had really taken from me.

That was when my mother suddenly screamed…

“DON’T READ THAT!”
