Chapter 152 - The Thirty-Second Horizon

The master console shrieked an agonizing red.

`TIME TO IMPACT: 29 SECONDS.`

The bridge of the subterranean Leviathan was drenched in crimson strobes, the warning klaxons pulsing at a frequency that vibrated straight through my molar teeth and skull. Forty-five feet beneath the ice-cold surface of Lake Tahoe, four Mark-48 heavyweight torpedoes—launched from an approaching Los Angeles-class strike boat commanded by my own brothers in arms—were running hot, straight, and true through the abyss. At fifty-five knots, their passive acoustic homing arrays had locked onto our cavitation trail.

And standing twenty paces away, swaying on a shattered knee braced with filthy, bloody cashmere, was Arthur.

My father. The man who had taken the $110,000 I bled for across three overseas deployments, pocketed it without a second thought, forged deed transfers on my $4 million Lake Tahoe sanctuary, and handed the keys to Clara over flutes of cheap champagne while I was freezing in a decompression chamber.

Now, his ruined face was illuminated by the tactical displays of a Cold War doomsday submarine he didn't even comprehend. In his shaking hands, the scavenged submachine gun drifted between my chest and Clara’s face.

"Step away from the helm, Marcus!" Arthur shrieked, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria over the roar of the hull turbines. "The Whispering Pines Trust owns every bolt in this shaft! The state probate filed it! Clara signed the conveyance! You don't own this lake! You don't own me!"

"Arthur, you stupid old bastard!" Clara screamed from the steel deck, crawling backward on her hands and knees, tears carving black trenches through the soot on her designer makeup. "Look at the screens! That's the United States Navy! They're firing warheads at us! Drop the gun so Marcus can abort the launch!"

"Shut up!" Arthur spat, flecks of bloody saliva hitting the armored glass. "You tried to cut me out! You and your Cayman shell companies! I found the ledgers in your bedroom closet before the feds kicked the door down! You were going to leave me in Carson City with a court-appointed public defender!"

`TIME TO IMPACT: 21 SECONDS.`

`TECTONIC PAYLOAD ARMING: STAGE ONE COMPLETED. DRILL BIT PENETRATING BASALT SHELF.`

The floor heaved beneath our boots with a sickening shudder. A low, grinding shriek echoed up through the keel as the massive hydraulic drills in the vessel’s belly bit directly into the North Tahoe fault line. If those warheads detonated while anchored to the bedrock, the displacement wouldn't just flood Emerald Bay—it would trigger a lateral slip across the entire Sierra Nevada crest.

"Dad," I said, keeping my voice cold, measured, flat as an iron plate. I didn't raise my rifle. My hands hovered three inches above the biometric scanner on the main console. "Listen to the sonar returns. That’s Squadron Three out there. If those torpedoes hit this pressure hull while the ballast tanks are flooded, the implosion will compress your body into meat paste in four milliseconds. Your trust won't matter. Your deed won't matter. You won't even leave behind teeth for dental records."

"You're lying!" Arthur sobbed, taking a limping step forward, his finger white on the trigger. "You always thought you were smarter than me with your uniform! Your mother loved you more! You came back with your medals and your lakefront estate, looking down your nose at me! I built this family! You owe me everything!"

`TIME TO IMPACT: 14 SECONDS.`

"Marcus, please!" Clara wailed, clutching her bruised ribs against the bulkhead. "Abort it! I give up the house! I sign the quitclaim! I’ll sign whatever your lawyer writes up! Just don't let us drown down here!"

"You signed your soul away six months ago, Clara," I whispered.

Arthur’s eyes twitched. In the reflection of the tactical HUD, I saw his shoulder dip—the universal pre-shot muscle cue of an amateur shooter about to panic-fire on full auto.

I didn't reach for my sidearm.

With a single, explosive burst of kinetic movement, I kicked the edge of the secondary steel navigation terminal. The swiveling heavy display swung outward on its reinforced hydraulic arm, slamming directly into Arthur’s broken right knee.

Arthur let out a high-pitched, wet squeal as his fractured patella gave way completely. The submachine gun barked in his hands, spitting a wild, six-round burst into the reinforced acoustic dampeners overhead. Sparks and shattered carbon-composite tiles rained down like burning hail.

I closed the distance before he hit the deck. My left hand caught the barrel, wrenching it clear of his grip with a sharp wrist twist that snapped his index finger against the trigger guard. He hit the nonskid plating on his stomach, gasping and weeping in agony.

`TIME TO IMPACT: 08 SECONDS.`

I spun back to the central console. The red glass flashed furiously:

`ENTER RETINAL AND PALM RECOGNITION TO ABORT.`

`WARNING: MANUAL ABORT WILL TRIGGER VESSEL SELF-DESTRUCT IN 60 SECONDS.`

I jammed my right palm onto the glowing green optic pad and stared directly into the retinal scanner aperture.

A sharp needle of ultraviolet light swept across my iris.

`IDENTITY CONFIRMED: COMMANDER MARCUS VANCE.`

`OVERRIDE CODE ACCEPTED: GHOST HORIZON.`

`TECTONIC DRILL ABORTED.`

`DISENGAGING FROM BEDROCK.`

The deafening rumble beneath the hull groaned into reverse. But on the sonar screen, four red blips had merged into a single killing cluster, less than two hundred yards from the port hull.

"Brace!" I roared, throwing my body across the emergency ballast lever and hauling it down with every ounce of leverage in my frame.
