Chapter 136 - Bloodline Verification

I tossed the unconscious operator over the railing and sprinted along the narrow catwalk toward the submarine’s dorsal access hatch. The upper blast door of the shaft was dissolving into slag under the heat of the thermite burn; a secondary assault team was cutting through the ceiling.

I reached the conning tower of the stealth submersible. A glass console glowed beside the hatch, demanding identity confirmation. I slammed my palm against the biometric sensor and leaned close to let the retinal scanner sweep across my pupil.

"Identity confirmed: Lieutenant Marcus Vance," a synthetic voice purred through the exterior speaker. "Initiating command transfer. Primary reactor status: 94%. Hull integrity: nominal."

The circular pressure hatch popped open with a burst of compressed air. I slid feet-first down the ladder into the claustrophobic confines of the vessel, pulling the hatch shut behind me and spinning the manual dogging wheel until the locking pins drove home into the titanium frame.

Above me, muffled explosions rippled across the cavern as the thermite breached the ceiling. The attackers had flooded the catwalks with heavy firepower, but their small arms were useless against the HY-100 high-tensile steel of the sub's hull.

I dropped into the pilot's bucket seat in the control compartment. Unlike the cramped, lever-heavy cockpits of standard Los Angeles-class submarines, this command deck was sleek, dominated by panoramic multi-touch glass displays and twin fly-by-wire flight sticks.

On the main tactical display, an automated log was cycling rapidly through classified mission entries. Every single entry was signed by Vice Admiral Eleanor Vance, dated over the last eight years.

She had not been dead. She had been operating a shadow black-project from beneath the very house my father had tried to pawn off to pay for Clara's lavish lifestyle. Whispering Pines was not a home—it was an offshore command bunker masking an unmonitored exit corridor into the Pacific basin through subterranean fault lines.

A voice cut through the cabin speakers: "Subsea lock disengaged. Flooding moonpool cavern to match external lake pressure."
