Chapter 35 - Severing the Fuse

*TIME REMAINING: 01:30.*

The sirens had escalated to a continuous, ear-splitting scream. The cathode-ray tube flashed in aggressive blocks of green text:

*DUAL COMMAND KEYS REQUIRED. MANUAL PURGE BYPASS REQUIRES ADMIRALTY OVERRIDE CHIP OR HARD-WIRE SEVERANCE.*

There were no keys. Arthur and his buyers had likely pocketed the physical tokens before fleeing when the sirens tripped.

"Hard-wire it is," I muttered through gritted teeth.

I dropped to the deck beneath the console, drawing my combat knife. Behind the steel access panel lay a rat’s nest of forty-year-old wiring insulated with brittle asbestos cloth. Among them, a thick bundle of red-sheathed cables pulsed with the high-voltage electrical current feeding directly to the detonation capacitors in the lower torpedo bays.

If I cut the ground wire first, the residual charge would short-circuit the blasting caps and detonate the warheads instantly.

My watch read forty-eight seconds.

I traced the circuits with bare fingers, feeling for the distinct thermal signature of an active circuit. Cold, cold, hot. The primary firing circuit was drawing massive power from the reserve battery bank behind me.

Thirty seconds.

The steel hull groaned. Lake Tahoe’s deep currents were pushing the vault over the edge of the shelf. Down the hall, rivets began to pop like rifle shots. Water sprayed through ruptured seams in the ceiling, showering me in freezing mist.

Twenty seconds.

I jammed the blade of the knife into the main relay box, using the non-conductive composite hilt to lever the primary distributor bar away from the solenoid. The metal screamed under the torque.

Ten seconds.

"Not today," I whispered, and brought the heavy titanium pry-tool down with all my weight on the distributor bar.

The steel sheared. A violent blinding arc of blue electricity exploded in my face, blasting me backward across the wet deck. Smoke poured from the console as the smell of melted copper filled the room.

The sirens died.

The strobing crimson lights flickered, died, and were replaced by the dim, steady hum of emergency amber auxiliaries.

On the main cathode-ray display, the numbers stopped.
