Chapter 129 - The Fleet Converges

We descended the spiral staircase into the ventral keel of the *Leviathan*.

Here, two hundred feet below the ocean surface, the water pressure on the external hull was palpable. The massive steel ribs of the dreadnought groaned like an ancient beast under unbearable strain. The deck was covered in three inches of oily bilge water that sloshed around our ankles with every pitch of the sea.

In the center of the bay lay the manual control station for the reactor scuttling system: four massive mechanical levers, painted in yellow and black hazard stripes, connected directly to heavy hydraulic pistons that would physically slam the boron control rods into the heart of the nuclear core.

Above the station, a thick Plexiglas window looked directly into the primary ventral torpedo tube—a weapon bay large enough to fire a miniature submarine or a multi-megaton tectonic charge.

Inside that tube rested the seismic weapon: a sixteen-foot cylinder of polished steel, its guidance fins locked, its warhead armed.

"The levers are locked with secondary hydraulic pressure!" Reyes yelled, grabbing the first hazard bar and throwing his full body weight against it. The bar moved an inch, then seized with a hiss of leaking fluid. "Marcus! The hydraulic pumps are dead! We don't have the pressure to drop the rods from here!"

"Then we vent the pneumatic reserves manually," I said, dropping my rifle and grabbing the heavy steel pipe wrench secured to the emergency maintenance rack.

Clara stood against the bulkhead, her back pressed against the weeping steel plates, watching us with a mixture of terror and manic triumph.

"You can't vent them in time, Marcus," she whispered, her voice trembling now as the cold reality of death finally penetrated her sociopathic armor. "The pressure will crush the pipes... it will rupture the entire keel..."

"Shut up, Clara," I snapped, swinging the heavy wrench against the high-pressure relief valve on the central hydraulic manifold.

Sparks flew. The brass valve cracked, spraying high-pressure hydraulic oil across my face and uniform. I swung again, putting twelve years of anger, twelve years of betrayal, and every ounce of strength I had left into the strike.

The valve shattered.

A deafening hiss of escaping nitrogen gas tore through the compartment. The mechanical levers jolted forward.

"Now, Reyes!" I roared. "Pull them!"

Together, Reyes and I grabbed the four hazard levers and hauled them down with a collective roar of effort.

Deep within the ship's spine, four tons of solid boron-carbide dropped into the raging nuclear cores.

The violet glow seen through the floor grating instantly died, replaced by the dull, dying amber of an emergency shutdown. The high-pitched whine of the power converters plummeted in pitch, winding down like a dying jet engine.

**REACTOR SHIFT: SAFE MODE.**

**TECTONIC PULSE LAUNCH: ABORTED.**

**CONTAINMENT RESTORED.**

Silence descended on the lower keel, broken only by our ragged, panting breaths and the dripping of bilge water from the ceiling.

Reyes collapsed onto an ammunition crate, his head in his hands, laughing hoarsely in sheer relief. "We did it... Holy shit, Master Chief... we actually did it."

I leaned against the control console, wiping hydraulic fluid and blood from my forehead.

Clara had slid down the bulkhead into the dirty bilge water, staring at the floor with unblinking, hollow eyes. The master key drive lay in the muck three feet from her boots.

Her empire was dead. The dreadnought was a dead iron hulk drifting in the Pacific.

Then, from the emergency speaker on my tactical vest, a secure channel beeped twice.

A crisp, calm voice broke through the static:

*"Master Chief Marcus Vance. This is Commander Harris, USS Hampton. We have surrounded the target vessel. Tactical boarding teams from SEAL Team Seven are securing the upper decks as we speak. Stand down. The operation is concluded."*

"Understood, Commander," I spoke into the mic, my voice shaking with exhaustion. "Target vessel neutralized. Reactor secured. We have two syndicate leaders in custody."

*"One more thing, Marcus,"* Harris’s voice continued, a slight edge of grim satisfaction in his tone. *"Your attorney, Mr. Bradley, just relayed a high-priority dispatch through Fleet Command comms. Thought you'd want to hear it personally."*

"Go ahead, Commander."

*"Thirty minutes ago, the Placer County Sheriff's Department, backed by federal marshals, breached the property at Whispering Pines, Lake Tahoe. Arthur Vance was apprehended in the living room while attempting to destroy financial records in the fireplace. The eviction is complete. The deed is officially restored to your name. Your house is clean, Master Chief."*

I looked across the flooded deck at Clara.

May you like

She heard every word through the speaker. A single tear tracked through the soot on her cheek, followed by a quiet, broken sob.

"Come on," I said, picking up my carbine and grabbing the chain of her cuffs. "Time to go home."
