Chapter 45 - Wings Over the Pacific

The twin turboshaft engines of the MH-53E Sea Stallion roared as we banked over the jagged peaks of the Sierra Nevada, racing westward toward the Pacific coastline.
Outside the fuselage, the bright blue skies of Lake Tahoe gave way to a dense, churning bank of black storm clouds rolling off the cold waters of Northern California. Below us, the shoreline receded into gray mist, replaced by the endless, violent swell of the open ocean.
Inside the cargo bay, six operators from Naval Special Warfare Development Group sat in silence, checking their rebreathers and waterproofing their suppressed carbines. Lieutenant Commander Miller sat opposite me, his tactical tablet tethered to STRATCOM's live satellite reconnaissance.
"Weather is deteriorating over the target zone," Miller reported through the comm headset. "Gale-force winds, swells running twenty-five feet. Tartarus isn't moving. It’s hovering on the surface, its ballast tanks partially flooded to maintain stability while the automated antenna aligns with naval communications satellites."
"Any sign of foreign assets?" I asked, tightening the straps on my tactical harness.
"Satellite picked up a high-speed surface craft leaving the area thirty minutes before Tartarus surfaced," Miller answered, his jaw tight. "We think Clara’s buyers had an interceptor waiting on the perimeter. But when the reactor spiked, they couldn't breach the titanium outer lock. The automated defense protocols fired pressurized steam through the outer scuttle, scorching two of their divers."
"So the sub's passive defenses are active," I said.
"Active and lethal," Miller confirmed. "The Tartarus AI was designed to perceive any unauthorized boarding as a Soviet special operations assault. It won't wait for us to present credentials. Once we hit that casing, we have precisely forty-two minutes before the primary ignition cycle reaches critical temperature."
The loadmaster stepped into the cabin, flashing three fingers. *Three minutes to drop zone.*
The rear ramp whined open, letting in a ferocious blast of freezing salt spray and gale-force wind. Below, amidst the violent whitecaps of the Pacific, lay an immense, blackened leviathan of rusted titanium. Four hundred feet of Cold War engineering, rolling sluggishly against the massive swells, steam venting from its dorsal missile tubes like the breath of a waking monster.
"Check your seals!" I ordered over the team channel. "Remember: this vessel doesn't recognize peace treaties, international law, or modern protocols. Treat every bulkhead as hostile territory."

I stepped to the edge of the ramp, the cold spray biting my face, and leaped into the abyss.
