Chapter 59 - Bloodlines and Treason

We fought our way up the spiral staircase under heavy automatic fire. The yacht’s private security was professional, but they weren't trained to withstand an assault by active-duty naval special warfare operators.
By the time we cleared the forward observation lounge, five contractors were down and the rest had thrown down their weapons, hands raised against the bulkheads.
I kicked open the heavy mahogany double doors leading into the master stateroom.

He didn't look like the tyrannical, arrogant patriarch who had sneered at me on the lawn of Whispering Pines while handing my deed to Clara. He looked shriveled, terrified, and utterly broken. His expensive tailored suit was rumpled, his hands trembling as he stared down the barrel of my sidearm.

"Shut up," I said, my voice dead. "Where is he, Arthur?"
"He... he’s in the auxiliary radio bay behind the bridge," Arthur whimpered, tears streaming into his white beard. "He said you’d come. He said you were too stubborn to die. Marcus, I'm your father! You can't let them arrest me! I did it for the family! I did it to keep the Vance legacy alive!"
"The only Vance legacy," I said, stepping past him without a second glance, "ends with you in an orange jumpsuit."

I signaled the two operators behind me. "Zip-tie him. If he twitches, drop him."
I racked the slide of my weapon and turned toward the armored hatch leading into the yacht’s nerve center.
