Chapter 24 - Deception Protocol

The diver raised his gloved hands slowly, his breath rattling wetly against his dive mask. Through the polarized plastic of his faceplate, his eyes were wide with sudden terror.
"The timer..." he stammered, his voice strained through an acoustic modulator. "You shoot me, the bedrock array goes live. We’re on a pulse relay. If the transmitter drops below fifty hertz, the primary charges under the granite footing blow."
I stepped closer, keeping my weapon leveled, and pulled down his mask. He was young, mid-thirties, with the sharp jaw and disciplined crew cut of private military contractors hired out of Virginia or Coronado.
"There is no pulse relay," I said coldly. "If you had placed charges capable of shattering four hundred feet of Tahoe granite, your own submersible would be sitting inside the collapse displacement zone. You're running an acoustic bluff to force an extraction of Clara’s drive."
I reached down with my free hand and yanked the umbilical cable from the boathouse junction box. The Pelican case terminal blinked red, then flashed: *SIGNAL TERMINATED — NO CARRIER.*
No explosion rocked the mountain. The lake remained glass-calm.
The diver swallowed hard, the bluster draining completely from his expression. "We were paid to retrieve the telemetry core before Fleet Command’s audit team arrived tomorrow. That’s all. It was an asset recovery job."
"Paid by whom?" I pressed the cold muzzle against his temple. "The text claimed Admiral Harris authorized this. Who drafted the clearance codes?"
May you like
"Not Harris," the operative gasped, trembling under the iron grip of my stance. "Vanguard Maritime Solutions. A private sub-contractor out of Reno. They... they knew your family was trying to seize the estate. They were the ones who funded your sister's legal team and fed your father the altered county deed templates. They needed the house tied up in domestic litigation so the perimeter would be legally cleared of federal watchdogs."
The full scope of the trap suddenly clicked into place. My father’s greed, Julianne’s petty arrogance—they hadn't just been acting out of dysfunctional entitlement. They had been manipulated, guided by an invisible hand that needed Whispering Pines stripped of its military oversight.
