Chapter 69 - The Gathering of Scorpions

By daybreak, Whispering Pines was swarming with federal agents, NCIS special investigators, and heavy forensic teams from the Department of Energy. The subterranean vault had been classified Top Secret/SCI within an hour of our discovery.

Admiral Harris arrived by naval helicopter at 0800, stepping onto the terrace where my father and sister had stood weeks earlier with their stolen champagne flutes. The Admiral looked out over the calm waters of the lake, his hands clasped behind his back, his expression carved from stone.

"Commander Vance," Harris said as I approached, saluting cleanly.

"Admiral."

"The forensics down in that hole are confirming our darkest projections," Harris said quietly. "Your father and his benefactors weren't just dabbling in domestic fraud. They were hoarding stolen military telemetry to sell to foreign state actors looking to map our underwater defense nets in the Pacific. That seismic trigger Victor activated was meant to be the distraction that covered the removal of these drives."

"And Clara?" I asked, my voice flat.

"Clara has been singing like a canary in the federal detention facility in Sacramento," Harris replied, a bitter smile touching his lips. "The moment we showed her the treason indictments, she turned on Arthur. She claims your father engineered the entire plot, that he told her you were already killed in action during the deep-sea run, and that the house was legally hers to take."

"She’s lying to save her skin," I said. "Her signature is on the transfer documents. She knew I was alive. She texted me hours before I arrived, asking if my life insurance policy was up to date."

"The grand jury doesn't care about her excuses," Harris said firmly. "Capital treason charges are being drawn up against Arthur, Clara, Victor, and four senior partners at the Apex syndicate's domestic shell corporations. None of them will ever see daylight again."

"And Whispering Pines?"

Harris turned to me, his gaze softening with rare respect. "The deed is irrevocably yours, Commander. The Navy Department has cleared all civilian liens, and the federal government is paying you full restitution for the unauthorized use of your private land during the covert installation. You’re a free man, Marcus. You can retire tomorrow as a Captain, live out your days on this mountain, and never look at the Navy again."

I looked around at the towering pines, the crystalline lake, the grand stone pillars of the home I had bled for.

It was peaceful. It was everything I had dreamed of during those endless, crushing months at sea.

Yet, as I looked at the dark waters rippling against the shoreline, the silence didn't feel like peace. It felt like an intermission.

"Admiral," I said quietly, "where is my father right now?"

Harris’s expression tightened. "He vanished from his guarded medical ward at Reno Memorial three hours ago. Someone killed two state troopers and pulled him out."
