Chapter 127 - The Family's Blood Ledger

"Gas!" Reyes shouted, reaching for his mask, but a burst of automatic fire through the overhead grating shattered the air filter on his tactical helmet. He stumbled back, choking as the sweet, deadly scent of almond-scented chemical vapor filled the hallway.

"Hold your breath! Port-side electrical hatch—now!" I bellowed.

I didn't waste time looking for a handle. I brought my carbine to bear on the high-voltage breaker panel recessed into the wall, emptying half a magazine into the transformer coils.

A blinding blue arc flash erupted with a deafening crack. The electrical explosion blew the access door clean off its hinges and instantly severed the power circuit controlling the corridor's hydraulic security locks. The blast doors groaned and hitched upward six inches.

I grabbed Reyes by his tactical harness and dragged him violently beneath the rising blast door just as the room behind us filled with dense white chemical fog. We tumbled into the reactor control vestibule, slamming the manual override lever down to seal the gas behind the heavy steel barrier.

Reyes fell to his knees, coughing violently, vomiting bile and saltwater onto the deck, his lungs burning from the trace amounts of gas he had inhaled.

"Reyes, look at me," I commanded, kneeling beside him and slapping his cheek with a gloved hand to keep him conscious. "Stay focused. Breathe slow. The air in this chamber is isolated from the main circulation loop."

"I'm... I'm good, Master Chief," he gasped, wiping his mouth with a trembling sleeve, his eyes bloodshot. "Just... give me thirty seconds."

I turned toward the main reactor observation bay.

The reactor room was a cathedral of violence and engineering. In the center of the vast multi-level chamber stood the twin thorium-salt reactors, suspended inside heavy magnetic containment spheres that glowed with a blinding, pulsating violet light. Surrounding the containment vessels were catwalks suspended over an abyss of coolant reservoirs.

And standing on the central bridge between the two reactor cores was Clara.

She had plugged the quantum drive into the primary diagnostic terminal. Holographic displays floated around her, bathing her sharp, aristocratic features in flickering blue light. Her hair was matted with sweat, her fingers flying across the controls as she initiated the final power surge.

"Marcus," she said without turning around. She could hear the heavy hiss of our boots on the steel grating. "You're late. The containment fields are already locked into resonance frequency. In six minutes, the thermal energy will discharge directly into the seabed."

"Shut it down, Clara," I said, stepping onto the catwalk, my rifle leveled at the center of her back. "It’s over. The Hampton and the Third Fleet are already converging on these coordinates. Even if you fire the pulse, you won't survive the depth charges."

Clara laughed—a hollow, hysterical sound that bounced off the steel walls of the reactor bay.

"The Navy?" She turned slowly to face me, holding a remote detonator in her left hand. "You think I care about the Navy? You think Father cares? He’s seventy-two years old, Marcus. His liver is failing, his accounts were frozen by your smug little attorney, Clara's offshore trusts were seized yesterday morning. We have nothing left! Whispering Pines was our only leverage, and your lawyer had the county sheriff serving eviction papers within forty-eight hours!"

She stepped closer to the edge of the catwalk, looking down into the boiling violet radiation of the coolant reservoir.

"We aren't planning to run, Marcus," she whispered, her eyes wide with fanatical clarity. "Tartarus doesn't negotiate with failures. If we don't deliver the tectonic strike, we're dead anyway. But if the pulse fires, Tahoe becomes ground zero for the new syndicate order. And you... you get to die knowing that every single dollar you earned serving this country went into the bullet that killed you."

She pressed the switch on the console.

The violet light turned to an angry, screaming scarlet. A high-decibel siren tore through the chamber:

**CRITICAL OVERLOAD INITIATED.**

**MAGNETIC CONTAINMENT PURGE IN 04:00.**

**CONTAINMENT SHIELDS COLLAPSING.**

Clara drew a compact ceramic pistol from her waistband and leveled it straight between my eyes.

"Goodbye, brother."
