Chapter 75 - The Bloodstained Bulkheads

We breached the companionway door using a hydraulic spreader, slipping into the interior of the *Caspian Ghost* like ghosts through a tomb.
The contrast between the screaming tempest outside and the interior of the ship was suffocating. The air was thick with the stench of heavy diesel fuel, burnt lubricant, and the coppery tang of fresh blood. The emergency red battle lamps flickered erratically down the long, narrow corridor, illuminating deep gouges in the steel walls and spent shell casings scattered across the non-skid floor.
"Contact front," Miller whispered through the comms.
Two private contractors wearing gray maritime tactical gear rounded the intersection seventy yards ahead, carrying short-barreled carbines. They never even had the chance to bring their weapons to their shoulders.
Miller’s point man fired two suppressed shots. The rounds struck the first guard dead center, dropping him instantly. The second contractor lunged for an alarm box mounted on the bulkhead, but I squeezed the trigger of my MCX twice. The man collapsed against the wall, sliding down into the heap of discarded wire harnesses, lifeless.
We stepped over the bodies, advancing through the ship's midsection toward the auxiliary engineering space.
"Marcus," Miller said, kneeling beside an open junction box. "Look at this wiring."
I leaned down. The junction box had been stripped of its commercial relays and replaced with an active-frequency military scrambler—the exact component that had vanished from the San Diego naval yard eighteen months ago. Attached to the terminal was a laptop running a continuous brute-force decryption cycle.
On the screen, flashing in bold yellow text, was an asset transfer ledger:
*PROJECT TARTARUS: PHASE FOUR COMPLETED.*
*ASSET TRANSFERRED: LAKE TAHOE COMMAND SUITE (OFFLINE).*
*REMAINING ASSETS: NUWC ADVANCED ACOUSTIC BLUEPRINTS (92% ENCRYPTED).*
*PAYMENT RECIPIENT: VANCE, ARTHUR / VANCE, CLARA.*
*DESTINATION ACCOUNT: BANQUE CANTONALE DE GENÈVE (ESCROW).*
They had been using Whispering Pines as an oceanic listening post, tethered to the deep-water hydrophones in Tahoe, cross-referencing naval satellite passes while pretending to host socialite fundraisers and lakeside wine tastings. Clara hadn't just wanted a multi-million-dollar villa to show off to her elite friends; she had needed the geographical elevation and granite shielding to bounce unauthorized signals across the Pacific.
"They sold everything," Miller spat, his eyes burning behind his goggles. "Every sub patrol schedule, every acoustic profile on the West Coast."
"And Arthur thought he could cash the check and retire in an offshore enclave," I said, cold fury pulsing through my veins. "Where is the bridge access?"
"Directly above us. But the main blast doors have been sealed from the inside. They know we’re on board."
A muffled shudder ran through the ship’s keel. The deep, resonant thump of heavy machinery engaging echoed from the deck below.
"That wasn't the main engine," I said, recognizing the sound with sudden clarity. "That’s the wet-well pump. They’re flooding the submersible launch bay."
"They’re preparing to abandon ship," Miller said.
May you like
"Not while I’m breathing," I replied, turning toward the lower companionway stairs. "Miller, take three men and secure the bridge. Cut their satellite uplink. Arthur isn't on the bridge—he’s heading for the deep runner."
