Chapter 118 - The Bridge of Shadows

The ladder led up sixty feet through the spine of the warship’s superstructure. My shoulders burned from the exertion, the salt-water burns on my skin stinging with every movement, but the focus was absolute. In naval special warfare, pain is just data; it tells you you're still alive to finish the mission.

We reached the upper maintenance hatch directly behind the bridge’s main electronics console.

Through the ventilation slats, the command deck of the *Nautilus IX* was clearly visible. It looked less like a traditional warship bridge and more like the control center of a high-tech espionage operation. Multi-spectral holographic displays cast an eerie cyan glow over eight workstations, all manned by technicians in black uniforms.

In the center of the bridge stood Julian Sterling.

He was in his late fifties, dressed in an immaculate charcoal cashmere sweater beneath a tactical jacket, sipping black coffee from a porcelain mug as if he were sitting in a boardroom on Wall Street rather than commanding a rogue warship in the middle of a Pacific hurricane.

"Status on the Lake Tahoe link?" Sterling’s voice was smooth, cultured, entirely devoid of stress.

A technician glanced up from a panoramic tactical display. "The land-based relay at the Whispering Pines property is fully operational, Director. The signal booster installed in the villa's private boathouse has synchronized with our low-frequency transmitter."

Sterling chuckled softly, taking a sip of his coffee. "Brilliant. Arthur Vance was truly the most pathetic kind of fool. A few hundred thousand dollars in promise, a forged deed to his own son's estate, and he personally carried the transponder directly into the secure perimeter for us. How poetic."

"And the son? Master Chief Vance?"

"Drowned in the wreckage of the rig, no doubt," Sterling dismissed the thought with a casual wave of his hand. "Even the legendary Navy SEALs cannot survive five minutes in thirty-foot seas at ten degrees Celsius. Begin the final arming sequence. Once the Mendocino charge fires, the Cascadia subduction zone will slip four inches. The resulting tsunami will erase every offshore research station from Oregon to San Francisco. Our short positions on California utility bonds will yield three billion dollars before the opening bell in Tokyo."

"Sir, automated sonar contact!" another operator suddenly shouted, his voice cracking with sudden panic. "Bearing two-seven-zero! High-speed submerged contact!"

Sterling frowned, setting his coffee mug down. "Identity?"

"It's... it's American, sir! Los Angeles-class attack submarine! It's the USS *Hampton*! They've breached the shelf!"

"Deploy acoustic decoys and fire a spread of wake-homing torpedoes," Sterling ordered, his voice darkening. "Do not let them close the range!"

"They don't have to close the range, Sterling," I said, kicking the ventilation hatch off its hinges with a thunderous metallic crash.
