Chapter 139 - The Boarding Breach

The underwater blast blew out every acoustic sensor on the exterior hull. A blinding flash of white illuminated the murky lakebed, followed by a hydraulic hammer of displaced water that slammed into the starboard quarter like a freight train.

The submersible rolled forty-five degrees, alarms wailing as internal emergency bulkheads automatically sealed to contain pressure drops. I was thrown hard against the side console, my ribs striking a steel bracket with a sickening crack.

The vessel scraped along the jagged granite edge of the trench, sending showers of sparks across the external video feeds before stabilizing on automated gyro-thrusters.

"Damage assessment," I coughed, tasting copper in my mouth.

"External hull integrity at eighty-nine percent," the system responded. "Acoustic stealth array damaged. Primary drive online. Notice: localized seabed collapse detected."

The explosion had collapsed the entire underwater ridge. Thousands of tons of shattered rock and silt were tumbling into the deep trench, creating an underwater avalanche that was dragging the vessel down toward the maximum depth limit of 1,640 feet.

Then, a metallic thud echoed from the upper hull.

It wasn't rock. It was the distinct, pressurized clamp of a magnetic docking collar.

A secondary transport had tracked the blast. Through the dorsal camera feed, I saw a specialized deep-sea submersible locked onto my upper hatch. A team of four divers in rigid-hull atmospheric diving suits—armored exoskeletons capable of operating at crush depth—were already welding an explosive cutting tape around the outer seal of the conning tower.

They were not trying to sink the vessel anymore. They wanted what was inside the black box on the lower deck.

And they were coming through the roof.
