Chapter 173 - Emergence in the Shallows

The watercraft breaking the surface of Emerald Bay had no legal registration, no Navy hull numbers, and no running lights. It was an eighty-foot littoral stealth platform—low-profile, angular, and coated in radar-absorbent polymer that made it look like a jagged piece of obsidian floating in the pristine alpine waters.

Twin high-output waterjets churned the bay into a frothing white wake as the vessel angled directly toward the private pier of Whispering Pines. Even at three hundred yards, I could see the topside hatches pop open. Armed figures clad in drysuits and pressurized combat webbing emerged onto the narrow deck, leveling automatic weapons toward my shoreline.

I slammed the magazine into the well of my rifle, racked the charging handle, and moved to the edge of the terrace.

My home had become an active breach zone. My sister, my mother, and the entire sycophantic extended family had been nothing more than useful idiots—pawns set up on the board so that while my legal team spent days fighting through state court injunctions and title transfers, Victor’s real asset remained untouched below the granite.

The radio on my tactical rig cracked to life on an emergency encrypted burst. Arthur's voice cut through the static, taut and frayed with panic.

"Marcus! My system just registered an emergency court override filed from an offshore sovereign server! It carries your father’s active flag cipher! He filed a federal injunction citing national defense requisition on Whispering Pines three minutes ago!"

"I already know, Arthur," I said, tracking the lead scout on the approaching craft through my holographic sight. "He’s outside. He’s surfacing in the bay."

"That’s impossible! Cascadia search teams found organic remains at the site—"

"He baited the hook with a drone and an empty suit," I interrupted, breathing slowly to steady my pulse. "Whispering Pines isn't just an estate. There's an active missile or dry-dock vault built into the bedrock beneath my feet. What did the Cascadia bond actually say?"

A frantic flurry of keystrokes sounded on Arthur’s end. "It wasn't an investment bond... Marcus, it was a secondary key. The $110,000,000 wasn't being laundered—it was being used to purchase collateral authorization for the subterranean weapons platform beneath Lake Tahoe! If Victor takes physical possession of the terminal inside that house, he has sovereign command immunity over the regional defense network!"

A heavy thud rattled the shoreline as the black craft rammed against the wooden slips of my dock, shattering the pylons like dry matchsticks.

"I have to go," I said. "He’s on the lawn."
