Chapter 84 - The Sister's Ultimatum

Harris laid down a blistering stream of suppressive fire, shattering the reinforced storm glass of the bridge-wing. Glass showered the outer deck like frozen hail.
Using the distraction, I surged up the exterior steel ladder, clearing the four steps at a sprint. I hit the bridge door with my shoulder, blowing the latch and rolling into the command cabin with my weapon raised.
Inside, the bridge was bathed in the sinister red glow of emergency battle lights. Multiple monitors displayed tactical charts of the Pacific Northwest, bathymetric scans of the Cascadia Trench, and financial transfer logs moving millions through offshore shell corporations.
Standing at the center console, backlit by the storm howling outside the shattered windows, was Clara.
She wasn't cowering. She stood tall, dressed in a black naval storm parka, a 9mm Glock held steadily in her right hand, while her left hand clenched the ruggedized Pelican case containing the seismic trigger unit. Her eyes were sunken, dark with exhaustion, but burning with a psychotic hatred.
"Lower the weapon, Marcus," she commanded, her finger tightening on the trigger of her sidearm. "One twitch, and I press the transmit button. Three minutes later, four million people along this coast will be swept away by forty-foot waves. All their infrastructure, their Naval bases, their listening posts—wiped clean."
"You won't survive it either, Clara," I said, holding my rifle dead-center on her chest, my finger resting lightly against the trigger. "The wave will capsize this boat before you even clear the strait."
"You think I care about this boat?" Clara sneered, a wicked smile twisting her lips. "I have an escape craft docked in the wet-well beneath us. A deep-submergence pressure capsule capable of withstanding the blast wave. While you drown, I'll be picked up off the coast of Vancouver by our buyers. Father understood the scale of this. He gave me Whispering Pines because he knew I had the stomach to do what was necessary! You were always too weak, Marcus. Too bound by your pathetic duty."
"Father is sitting in an orange jumpsuit in a maximum-security federal holding facility," I said calmly, taking a half-step forward. "Arthur Vance has given up every single one of your offshore shell companies. Whispering Pines is sealed by federal marshals. You have nothing left, Clara. No money, no family, and nowhere to run."

Her face contorted in absolute fury. "I have the weapon! And as long as I have the weapon, I have everything!"
She lunged her left thumb down toward the flashing red trigger.
