Chapter 21 - The Ghost in the Signal

A soft, digital chime sounded from Clara’s desk.
I looked down. The secured satellite comms unit left behind by Master Chief Miller for emergency contact was flashing an amber warning light.
I tapped the interface. The screen flickered to life, displaying a real-time tactical sonar map of Lake Tahoe’s central basin—the deepest trench in the lake, plummeting over sixteen hundred feet beneath the surface.
Directly below the granite foundation of Whispering Pines, at a depth of four hundred meters, an anomalous acoustic signature was moving.
It wasn't an outboard motor, and it wasn't a civilian vessel. It was a pressurized, unmanned underwater submersible, creeping slowly along the submerged granite shelf that anchored my boathouse to the mountain.
A text transmission began decoding on the terminal screen, routing through an unlisted naval intelligence frequency:
*COMM-ID: UNKNOWN.*
*ORIGIN: PENTAGON / SPECIAL ACCESS PROGRAM.*
*MESSAGE: Commander Vance. Your father and sister played their parts adequately to clear the surface perimeter. You have done well to secure the boathouse. Now, deliver the second key from Clara's desk to the dock, or the structural charges placed beneath Whispering Pines' bedrock will be detonated remotely.*
*You have four minutes to comply.*
*Do not call Admiral Harris. Who do you think authorized the deployment?*

At that exact moment, every light in the villa died.
The heavy iron security gates at the perimeter of the estate slammed shut with a deafening, automated clatter, their power severed. Outside, down on the dock, the deep water of Lake Tahoe began to churn and froth, a dark, metallic hull breaking through the surface of the midnight-blue water right beneath my window.
