Chapter 42 - Ghost of the Mendocino

The encrypted video terminal hummed with the high-frequency vibration of a secure satellite uplink. Vice Admiral Miller’s face was cast in harsh, pallid shadows on the monitor, the underground combat center behind him buzzing with frantic tactical chatter.

"Read that signal back to me, Miller," I commanded, my voice dropping into the steady, flat timber of a shipboard tactical officer. "Every syllable."

Miller rubbed his bloodshot eyes. "It’s transmitting on extreme low-frequency military spectrum, cycling through a 1978 classified dead-man frequency. It bypassed NORAD, bypassed STRATCOM, and aimed a laser-burst optical package straight at the transceiver grid buried under your boathouse." He leaned forward until his face filled the screen. "It’s not just using your rank and name, Marcus. It’s broadcasting your active Navy service number and your grandfather’s retired cryptographic ID."

My chest tightened. My grandfather, Captain Ronald Vance, had vanished from naval records in the late 1970s under an operational seal so tight not even my Flag-level clearance could breach it. Arthur Vance, my useless, thieving father, had always claimed his father died in a drunk-driving accident in San Diego. Another lie in a family built entirely on fraud and betrayal.

"The vessel," I said, pointing at the satellite feed. "Identify it."

"There is no official hull number," Miller answered. "During the height of the Cold War, the Navy explored autonomous deep-trench deterrents under Project *Tartarus*. The idea was to build automated, nuclear-powered missile platforms capable of sitting in oceanic trenches for decades, immune to first-strike decapitation. If Washington fell, the underwater relays—like the one hidden under Lake Tahoe—were supposed to send an acoustic activation vector across the tectonic fault lines."

"And when I severed the Tahoe distributor bar to prevent Clara’s crew from firing the local charges," I realized, "the sudden harmonic frequency drop mimicked an arming order."

"Precisely," Miller said. "Tartarus has risen from the Mendocino Trench. Four hundred miles out, three thousand fathoms deep until twenty minutes ago. It carries twelve intercontinental ballistic missiles with vintage thermonuclear warheads. No crew. No life support. Just an automated analog brain executing an operational protocol programmed before you were born."

The monitor pinged. A red geometric overlay locked onto the submarine's sail.

*OPTICAL BURST RECEIVED: AUTHENTICATION WINDOW OPEN. 180 MINUTES TO FIRING SEQUENCE.*

"Marcus," Miller whispered. "The automated brain won't accept an abort code from the Pentagon. It only recognizes the biometric signature and cryptographic cipher of Ronald Vance—or his direct lineal naval successor. It's asking for you. And if you aren't on that bridge in three hours, it will fire its salvo at targets that no longer exist on any modern map."
