Chapter 39 - The Ghost Account Liquidation

The morning sun flooded the conference room of the Federal District Court in Reno, Nevada.

Samuel Caldwell sat at the head of the mahogany table, looking immaculate in a charcoal three-piece suit. Across from him sat an army of federal prosecutors, military JAG officers, and the trembling legal counsel that Clara and Arthur had scraped together using the last of their credit lines.

"Let’s review the final numbers," Caldwell said, his voice smooth as aged whiskey as he flipped open a thick leather binder.

Clara sat between two federal marshals, her eyes red, her hands shaking so hard she couldn't hold a pen.

"Pursuant to the Title 18 asset forfeiture filings and the emergency maritime preservation acts invoked yesterday morning," Caldwell continued, "all personal assets belonging to Arthur Vance and Clara Vance have been frozen pending court-martial and federal racketeering indictments."

"We filed for bankruptcy protection two hours ago," Arthur's public defender stammered, sweating through his collar. "The family trust—"

"The family trust no longer exists," Caldwell interrupted sharply. He slid a sheet of paper across the table. "Whispering Pines was never part of Arthur Vance's estate. The original deed, recorded in 1974 and re-certified in my client Commander Marcus Vance's name last month, supersedes any fraudulent transfers. Furthermore, we have successfully linked Arthur Vance's offshore shell company in Grand Cayman to the unauthorized debiting of Commander Vance’s active-duty accounts."

Caldwell looked directly at Clara.

"The hundred and ten thousand dollars you stole from your brother to pay off your luxury boutique credit lines, Clara? We traced it. It was funneled through an unauthorized wire transfer routed through a foreign procurement broker currently under arrest in Zurich."

Clara burst into fresh tears. "Marcus, please! I didn't know they were spies! Dad told me it was just antique equipment! He said we’d sell the house, pay you back double, and move to Italy! He said you’d never know!"

"You drank champagne in my living room while your contractors drilled into my foundation," I said from the back of the room, my arms crossed over my chest. "You threw my belongings into storage bins and tried to sell my grandfather’s medals to pay for your wedding catering."

"Commander," the lead federal prosecutor spoke up, closing his briefcase. "The Department of Justice has accepted the Navy's jurisdiction over Arthur Vance. Clara Vance will face fourteen counts of wire fraud, conspiracy to commit treason, and interstate theft. She will be remanded to federal custody without bail."

The marshals stood, their hands dropping to their holsters as they hoisted Clara to her feet.

She looked at me as they dragged her toward the holding cells, screaming my name, begging for mercy, her voice echoing down the marble halls until the heavy steel doors slammed shut.
