Chapter 177 - The Severed Key

Victor lunged with the desperate fury of a man who knew his empire had already turned to ash. His palm slammed toward the glowing biometric scanner on the terminal face, the luminescent ring flaring from emerald to an angry crimson.

I didn't hesitate.

Years of naval tactical training overrode every shred of bloodline hesitation. I stepped inside his reach, my left forearm deflecting his raised pistol barrel upward just as a deafening round tore through the timber eaves of Whispering Pines. The concussion shattered a panoramic window behind us, sending a shower of safety glass raining onto the granite flagstones like diamond hail.

With my right hand, I delivered a brutal palm strike directly under his chin.

Victor’s head snapped back with a wet crack. The momentum spun him off balance, his fingers clawing wildly at the terminal’s brass casing. But his thumb grazed the perimeter sensor. A synthetic chime echoed from the console, followed by a mechanical female voice that cut through the thunder of the hovering Black Hawks:

*“Tectonic cavitation cycle initiated. Sub-keel resonance in three minutes and zero seconds.”*

"You fool!" Victor gasped, spitting blood onto the stone as he crashed onto his knees. His eyes burned with feverish insanity. "You can't abort it from the surface! The primary relay is submerged beneath eighty feet of freshwater at the base of the foundation shelf! You've doomed us both!"

Above us, the night erupted in controlled violence. Two fast-ropes dropped from the belly of the lead MH-60M. Heavily armed operators from Naval Special Warfare Command hit the terrace like dark specters, their suppressed rifles raised, weapon lights cutting through the rotor wash and swirling pine needles.

"Drop your weapon! Hands behind your head! Down on the deck, Vance!" barked Master Chief Miller, the point man, slamming his boot against Victor’s wrist and kicking the discarded sidearm skittering off the terrace edge and into the dark lake below.

Two operators pinned my father to the granite, wrenching his arms behind his back and securing him with heavy-duty flex-cuffs. Victor didn't fight them. He just threw his head back, laughing a jagged, broken laugh as water sprayed over his face from the rotor turbulence.

"It's over, Marcus!" he hissed, staring at me through the glare of the tactical floodlights. "You brought an army to save a house that will be sitting at the bottom of Emerald Bay before your helicopter engines cool down!"

I ignored him, dropping to one knee before the humming console. The countdown display was glowing through the reinforced glass: *02:41... 02:40...*

My satellite earpiece crackled to life, Arthur’s crisp voice cutting through the static. "Marcus! The telemetry from the county recorder’s office just flagged an anomalous seismic transducer signature registered to Whispering Pines' underwater foundation! The system is drawing sixty megawatts from the sub-aquatic grid!"

"I know," I replied, breathing hard, my tactical knife already in my hand as I jammed the blade into the console's maintenance casing. "He tripped the dead-man sequence. The abort cipher is locked out at the surface terminal."

May you like

"You have under three minutes," Arthur warned, his voice losing its usual judicial calm. "If that transducer detonates the acoustic charge in the granite fault, the shockwave will displace half the bay. Whispering Pines will shear off the bedrock and slide straight into the abyss."

I looked out over the edge of the terrace into the black, churning water below the boathouse. There was only one way to kill the signal.
