Chapter 132 - The Admiral’s Ghost

The screen cast a cold, luminescent green glow over the stone walls of the cellar. My hand remained frozen on the hilt of my combat knife, my knuckles whitening against the grip. I had buried my mother eight years ago. I had stood in the pouring rain at Arlington while a rifle detail fired three crisp volleys into the gray Virginia sky and a folded ensign was pressed into my trembling hands.

Yet there she sat on the encrypted feed. Her hair was silvered at the temples, cut with standard military precision just above the collar of her Navy service dress blues. The two silver stars of a Rear Admiral had been replaced by the three stars of a Vice Admiral. Her eyes, sharp and calculating as slate, looked directly through the lens and straight into my soul.

"I know what you are thinking, Marcus," her voice drifted through the low-frequency speaker of the tactical terminal, completely level and devoid of sentimentality. "You are wondering if this is a deepfake or a synthetic voice clone engineered by Clara's syndicate handlers. Enter your emergency cipher. The one I gave you when you graduated from the Naval Academy at Annapolis."

My throat felt dry, like coarse sand. Slowly, I reached down with my left hand and typed a twelve-digit alphanumeric string into the terminal's mechanical keyboard. It was a sequence known only to two living souls on Earth.

The screen flickered. A green checkmark appeared, followed by a classified clearance banner: *LEVEL 7 - DEEP BASIN ACCESS AUTHORIZED.*

"Whispering Pines was never just a timber-and-granite tax shelter, Marcus," Eleanor Vance said, leaning forward slightly. "Arthur thought he was being clever, funneling money from his failed real estate ventures while you were deployed. And Clara thought she was stealing a luxury playground to entertain international financiers. But neither of them ever understood why I insisted on buying this exact plot of land on the northern ridge of Lake Tahoe forty years ago."

The monitor shifted, splitting into two windows. On the left was the live camera feed of my mother. On the right was an architectural blueprint of the villa, extending far past the wine cellar into a massive subterranean shaft bored through two thousand feet of solid Sierra granite, plunging directly into the bottom of the Tahoe trench.

"Leviathan-02 is docked in the abyssal subterranean cradle beneath the bedrock," she stated coldly. "And hostile elements within Fleet Intelligence have finally tracked the beacon. You have less than twelve minutes before their wet-ops team breaches the property perimeter from the lake."
