Chapter 17 - The Shattered Facade

The corridor fell dead silent.
Chloe stopped crying, her jaw dropping as she saw me standing tall beside the federal agents. Arthur’s face flushed an ugly, mottled crimson, his bluster evaporating like mist on hot stone.
"Marcus!" Chloe cried out, dropping to her knees and pressing her hands through the bars. "Marcus, thank God! Please tell these savages who we are! Daddy was just joking about the deed, Marcus! We were just throwing a party for my engagement! Tell them to open these doors! I’m your sister!"
I stopped two feet from her cell, looking down at her with eyes that carried neither anger nor pity—only the absolute, unyielding coldness of an officer surveying a fallen adversary.
"You aren't my sister, Chloe," I said quietly. "A sister doesn't drink champagne on the terrace of a house she stole while her brother is risking his life over the ocean. A sister doesn't laugh about leaving her flesh and blood out in the snow with a single sea bag."
"Marcus, please!" she sobbed, tears cutting through the grime on her cheeks. "It was Daddy’s idea! Daddy and Julian! They told me if Whispering Pines was in my name, we could use the equity to buy a penthouse in San Francisco! They said you had a Navy pension and didn't need the money! I just wanted a nice wedding, Marcus!"
"Shut your mouth, Chloe!" Arthur roared, slamming his fist against the bars of his cell. He glared at me, his eyes bulging with veins. "You treacherous, pathetic ingrate! I am your father! I gave you life! Whispering Pines belongs to the Vance family, and I am the head of this family! You owe me everything you have! That house was Clara’s, and everything Clara owned belonged to me!"
"Clara despised what you became, Arthur," I said, my voice cutting through his shouting like a surgical blade. "I read her journals tonight. She knew you were stealing from her estate before the cancer took her. She put Whispering Pines in an irrevocable trust specifically so your parasitic hands could never touch it."
Arthur let out a harsh, barking laugh, trying desperately to cling to his delusion of control. "A trust? A piece of paper! My notary certified the deed! The transfer was recorded with the county clerk at three o'clock yesterday afternoon! By law, the property is Chloe’s! You can't touch us!"
NCIS Special Agent Torres stepped forward, pulling a pair of reinforced carbon-steel flex-cuffs from her belt.
"Arthur Vance," Torres announced, her voice ringing with institutional authority that silenced the entire cell block. "You, Julian Rossi, and Chloe Vance are being taken into custody pursuant to a federal warrant issued by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California."
Julian sank to the floor, burying his face in his hands, openly weeping.
"Warrant?" Arthur stammered, his bravado finally fracturing. "For what? This is a civil property dispute!"
"Counts one through four: Conspiracy to commit espionage and theft of classified defense logistics," Torres stated, reading from the indictment document with clinical detachment. "Counts five through eight: Aggravated identity theft of an active-duty naval officer. Counts nine through twelve: Wire fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering exceeding five million dollars. And count thirteen: Obstruction of justice."
Agent Torres looked at Arthur, her expression utterly pitiless. "The boathouse was breached forty-five minutes ago, Mr. Vance. We have the drive. We have the ledger. We have your Russian buyers in custody."
Arthur’s face went chalk-white. His knees gave out, and he caught himself against the metal washbasin, gasping for air as if the room had run out of oxygen.
"No..." he whispered. "No, that’s... that’s impossible. That was off-grid..."
"Nothing is off-grid when you steal from the United States military, Arthur," I said. "You stole one hundred and ten thousand dollars from me, claiming you needed medicine and food. You stole my mother’s peace. And you tried to steal my home."

I leaned in, looking him directly in his hollow, cowardly eyes.
"The party is over, Arthur. You’re never setting foot in Tahoe again."
