Chapter 89 - The Architect's Will

"Step away from the console, Clara," I said, holding my rifle leveled at the base of her skull. "Cancel the abort sequence."
Clara turned slowly, leaning her back against the control bank. There was no fear in her eyes—only a cold, hollow madness that had completely consumed whatever sister I had once known.
"I can't abort it, Marcus," she said, a bitter, triumphant smile spreading across her lips. "The code is hard-locked. It requires a dual biometric key. Mine... and the architect’s."
"Arthur Vance," I said.
"You think Arthur Vance was the architect?" Clara laughed, the sound harsh and grating in the metallic room. "Arthur was just our banker! A pathetic money-launderer who used father’s real estate holdings to wash the syndicate’s dark funds! Arthur didn't have the brains to design an operation like this!"
"Then who is running you?"
Clara gestured toward the main monitor screen. With a tap of her finger, she cleared the seismic display, revealing an encrypted live data stream.
Names, naval vessel movements, classified submarine acoustic signatures, and offshore account numbers scrolled across the screen at blinding speed. At the top of the hierarchy was an emblem I knew all too well: the seal of a high-level private maritime security conglomerate holding billions in Pentagon defense contracts.
"Father knew them twenty years ago," Clara said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "When he bought Whispering Pines, he didn't pay for it with his savings. He paid for it with the first batch of stolen naval hydrophone data! That house was bought with blood, Marcus. He gave it to me because I was continuing the family business. You were the only fool who believed we were an honorable family!"
"He stole forty years of my life," I said, my voice ice-cold. "He made me bleed for a country he was selling out from under my feet."
"And now you get to die for it," Clara said.
Suddenly, her hand whipped toward a recessed red emergency lever on the console wall.
"Clara, don't!" I shouted.

She pulled the lever with all her weight.
