Chapter 34 - The Abort Cipher

My combat boots clattered against rusted steel grating as I moved through the subterranean complex. The architecture was unmistakably military—heavy bulkhead doors, vintage analog panels, thick conduits wrapped in rubberized lead, and vacuum-tube computer racks humming with dangerous amounts of revived electrical current.
This wasn't a civilian salvage site. This was an auxiliary strategic redoubt, built to survive a full-scale thermonuclear exchange by sheltering a retaliatory command node deep within an inland body of water.
And my father, Arthur Vance, along with Clara's foreign handlers, hadn't just discovered it; they had tried to strip-mine its automated defense systems to sell the antique cryptological modules on the black market. In doing so, they had tripped a dead-man's failsafe designed to obliterate the base and prevent its recovery by foreign powers.
I sprinted into the central command silo.
In the center of the circular room, surrounded by monitors displaying green cathode-ray sweeps, was the primary purge terminal. Four massive explosive charges—ten-thousand-pound warheads of specialized underwater demolition compound—were armed and cycling current.
*TIME REMAINING: 02:45.*
On the control deck lay modern tools: high-speed optical drill rigs, satellite uplink relays, and tactical data-taps bearing the insignia of the foreign syndicate Clara had worked for. Beside them sat a half-drained bottle of vintage single-malt Scotch—Arthur’s favorite brand.
My father had sat here, perhaps only days ago, drinking while international mercenaries ripped apart military property, entirely indifferent to the fact that their crude tampering was arming a regional cataclysm.
"Terminal override," I commanded into the comm system, but the interface was entirely analog. A split-key ignition switch required dual authorization.
Above the switch was a brass plaque containing the commissioning roster of the facility from 1974.
My heart hammered against my ribs.
At the very top of the commanding officer list was the name: *CAPTAIN G. VANCE, USN.*
My grandfather.

The family villa at Whispering Pines hadn't been built on that cliff overlooking the lake by accident. My grandfather hadn't chosen that land for the view. He had built Whispering Pines directly above the vertical ventilation shaft of this subterranean bunker. He had stood guard over it his entire life, until he died and left the estate to me.
Arthur hadn't just tried to steal my house; he had tried to break into his own father’s vault to sell the grave of his family's legacy.
