Chapter 62 - Choke Point at Zero Depth

The hiss of the Halon gas was a death sentence delivered in a whisper. The heavy chemical suppressant flooded the airtight server vault, displacing ambient oxygen at a terrifying rate. My lungs burned on instinct, screaming for an intake of clean air that was rapidly thinning into nothingness.
Across the stainless-steel console, Victor raised his ceramic pistol, his eyes wide and bloodshot, fixed on me with rabid fanaticism. He didn't care about surviving; he was an ideologue consumed by his own bitter architecture of ruin.
"Three minutes, Marcus!" he hissed through clenched teeth, his voice strained as the oxygen level plummeted. "The seabed injector fires whether you put a bullet in me or not!"
I didn't waste oxygen shouting back. Navy dive training took over: slow the heart rate, suppress panic, conserve every scrap of hemoglobin-bound oxygen in the bloodstream. I dropped low, throwing my shoulder hard against the edge of a rolling equipment rack.
A round from Victor’s ceramic piece cracked through the air where my chest had been a fraction of a second before, shattering a secondary monitor into a shower of sparks and smoking plastic. The lack of muzzle flash confirmed low-velocity, non-metallic ammunition—designed specifically to bypass deep-security scanners.
I kicked the weighted base of the equipment rack forward. It slammed into Victor's shins with a dull, bone-jarring crunch. He stumbled backward, his second shot punching harmlessly into the ceiling baffles. Before he could reacquire his sightline, I closed the distance.
My combat knife cleared its sheath in a single fluid arc. I struck his wrist with the pommel, shattering the carpal bones and sending the ceramic gun skittering across the polished floorboards. Victor lunged at my throat with manic strength, his fingers digging into my tactical vest.
"You took everything from our family!" he wheezed, spit flying from his lips. "You took the villa! You buried Clara! You destroyed us!"
"You destroyed yourselves when you decided treason was an investment strategy," I grated out, clamping my hand around his trachea and driving him back against the main mainframe.
The cold metal of the terminal shook beneath the impact. Above us, the countdown glared in violent crimson: *02:44... 02:43...*
My vision was beginning to narrow at the edges, gray static creeping in from oxygen starvation. Halon didn't just suffocate; it induced cardiac arrhythmia under extreme exertion. I couldn't trade blows with him any longer.
I hooked his ankle, swept his balance, and slammed him down into the reinforced floor. With my left knee pinning his diaphragm, I grabbed the heavy emergency fire axe mounted on the wall rack behind the terminal.
I didn't swing for Victor. I brought the steel pick of the axe down with every ounce of my remaining strength directly into the armored Halon manifold running parallel to the intake vents. The steel severed the primary conduit, venting the pressurized reserve tanks outside the room and forcing the emergency backpressure valve to trip.
With a shuddering mechanical groan, the emergency bypass dampers snapped open. A fresh draft of freezing Sierra night air surged into the chamber from the ventilation shafts above.
I dragged air deep into my searing lungs, blinking away the gray veil just as the terminal screen flashed an ominous amber alert:
*CRITICAL WARNING: UPLINK ENCRYPTION LOCK ENGAGED.*
*SEISMIC INJECTION ARRAY: 01:58... 01:57...*

*MANUAL OVERRIDE CODE REQUIRED.*
Victor lay on the floor, laughing through a bloody cough. "You can't stop it, Commander. The cipher is in my head. And I'm taking it to the grave."
