Chapter 174 - The Granite Bastion

The assault team hit the pebble beach in a staggered formation, moving with the disciplined efficiency of Tier-One contractors. Four men in the point element, three carrying suppressive carbines and the fourth lugging a heavy breaching charge. Two snipers remained mounted on the bow of the stealth craft, scanning the villa’s windows with thermal sights.
They expected an officer who fought with legal briefs and maritime code. They forgot that before I had money to renovate this estate, I spent ten years on frontline VBSS deployments clearing hostile holds in the Persian Gulf.
I kicked open the side access hatch to the villa's exterior utility closet, bypassed the civilian breakers, and shoved the primary disconnect lever for the landscape floodlights into the active override.
A blinding bank of four-thousand-watt halogen spotlights, installed along the granite retaining wall to illuminate the pine canopy at night, flared to full intensity. The beams struck the water's edge with daylight brightness, blooming instantly inside the contractors' night-vision systems.
Cries of pain and disorientation echoed across the water.
I leaned around the stone pillar of the balcony and squeezed off four controlled pairs.
The lead breacher went down instantly, his pack clattering against the granite steps. The point scout scrambled for cover behind the overturned jet-ski dock, firing a wild burst that chewed through the cedar railing above my head in a shower of splintered wood.
I dropped to the floor, rolling beneath the low brick parapet as high-velocity rounds punched holes through the double-pane glass behind me. Inside the living room, the pneumatic elevator shaft groaned louder, hydraulics hissing as the subterranean payload continued its slow ascent from the depths of the earth.
A loudspeaker mounted on the stealth craft crackled with static, followed by a voice that had ruled my childhood with iron fist and absolute contempt.
"Stand down, Commander," Victor Vance’s voice bellowed, deep and resonant over the churning water. "You fought well against Clara. You dismantled her little fraud like a proper naval officer. But you are playing in a sandbox with children, Marcus. This property belonged to Flag Command twenty years before you drew your first breath. Hand over the terminal keys, or I will level the ground you're standing on."

I reloaded my weapon without answering. In the military, you never negotiate when the enemy is in your kill zone.
