Chapter 64 - Extraction at Timberline

The blast shutters didn't yield easily, but with the auxiliary control board restored, I initiated a manual override. The thick steel plates ground upward into their ceiling housings, revealing the dim, snow-dusted clearing of the Sierra safehouse.

Through the broken pines, the strobing blue and red lights of federal tactical cruisers were already reflecting against the granite crags. The perimeter had held. NCIS Special Agent Vance led the boarding team through the treeline, assault rifles raised in low-ready positions, their breath puffing white in the freezing mountain night.

"Room clear!" Vance barked as his team swept through the shattered entryway of the bunker. He took one look at Victor slumped against the console, his wrist swollen and purple, and then turned his gaze to me. "Commander Vance. Situation report."

"Payload neutralized," I said, stepping away from the main console and handing him my encrypted drive. "Seismic array telemetry is locked down, and the broadcast signature has been traced to an underwater listening relay off Cape Mendocino. Victor was using the family's old offshore logistics network to channel private syndicate capital."

Vance took the drive, his face grim. "We have the perimeter secured. What about the rest of them?"

"Clara is still in maximum custody, but Victor’s network extends beyond the Tahoe basin," I said, wiping soot and carbon residue from my knuckles. "He wasn't acting alone. The shell corporations that funded this facility trace back to an entity called the Apex Maritime Trust."

Vance cursed softly. "Apex. That’s a Panamanian flag carrier syndicate we’ve been tracking through the Seventh Fleet’s intelligence sector. If they’re operating inside domestic waters, this isn't just family fraud anymore. It’s state-sponsored corporate terrorism."

Two tactical officers hauled Victor to his feet, slapping heavy steel zip-cuffs around his wrists and ankles. As they dragged him toward the door, he turned back, his teeth bared in a venomous grin.

"You think you won, Marcus?" he snarled, spitting blood onto the threshold. "You saved a few miles of shoreline. But Apex doesn't leave loose ends. They already know the signal went dark. They know the Lake Tahoe estate was the staging point. You think Whispering Pines is safe? Look to the water, Commander. Look to the deep water."

"Get him out of here," Vance ordered sharply.

The agents pushed Victor into the rear of an armored transport. I walked out onto the granite overlook, looking east toward the dark expanse of Lake Tahoe. The lake was invisible under the low winter clouds, but an uneasy premonition tightened in my chest.

Victor’s threat wasn't the rambling of a defeated man. Whispering Pines had been my sanctuary, the $4 million estate I bought with my naval service earnings, the home my father had tried to steal out from under me to hand to my sister while they popped vintage champagne on my terrace.

We had cleared out their squatters, exposed their forgeries, and sent the dirty lawyers to prison. But what if the estate itself had been chosen by my father not for its luxury, but because of what was buried underneath it?

My satellite phone vibrated against my tactical vest. The caller ID flashed an encrypted secure tag from Fleet Logistics Command.

I thumbed the receiver. "Commander Vance."

"Marcus, it’s Admiral Harris," the voice on the other end was clipped, stripped of all diplomatic veneer. "Our bathymetric sonar buoys in Lake Tahoe just picked up an acoustic disturbance near your property’s private dock. Depth: six hundred feet. Velocity: twelve knots. It's not a civilian submersible."
