Chapter 25 - Silent Descent

I didn't give the contractor time to reconsider his honesty. Using high-tensile zip ties from his own kit, I bound his wrists and ankles to the heavy dock pilings, gagged him with waterproof tactical tape, and did the same to the unconscious sentry.
The submersible’s hatch was still cracked open, a soft hum vibrating from its auxiliary life-support systems. If Vanguard Maritime had deployed an autonomous recovery craft into Lake Tahoe, there had to be a support vessel coordinating the acoustic telemetry from surface waters. Lake Tahoe was vast, spanning twenty-two miles of cold, deep water, but deep-submergence operations required line-of-sight high-frequency uplinks.
I dropped into the submersible’s cockpit. The interior was cramped, dominated by twin pilot seats, a navigation console, and a bank of ruggedized displays. The master navigation screen was still actively plotting a bearing toward the northeast shore—specifically, toward the desolate waters off Deadman Point.
A blinking cursor on the tactical screen tracked an intermittent transponder signal: *M/V AVALON — STATIONARY AT 1,200 YARDS.*
The drive Clara had hidden under her desk hummed faintly in my pocket. I plugged it into the submersible's auxiliary data port to see what Vanguard was so desperate to recover.
The screen flashed as Clara's encrypted partitions unlocked. Files, video feeds, and hydrophone logs began cascading down the monitor. My sister thought she was taking a vacation house with five bedrooms and a hot tub. In reality, Whispering Pines sat directly above the US Navy’s clandestine acoustic monitoring grid for the Sierra Nevada tectonic fault line—a black-budget array installed during the height of the Cold War to detect covert underground seismic testing.

And Clara’s final log entry, dated forty-eight hours before my return, showed that Vanguard Maritime had tapped the grid to smuggle unregistered surveillance equipment through the lake bed.
They weren't just after real estate. They were burying evidence of treason beneath my boathouse.
