Chapter 46 - The Black Boarding

The plunge into the freezing Pacific knocked the breath from my lungs for a split second before my drysuit equalized.

I surfaced twenty yards from the jagged, barnacle-encrusted flank of *Tartarus*. The swells were brutal, lifting me ten feet into the air before crashing me toward the churning hull. To my left and right, the SEAL operators hit the water with surgical precision, immediately deploying magnetic ascenders.

"Target the secondary sail hatch!" I shouted through the waterproof comm. "The main deck casing is compromised!"

A massive swell lifted me directly toward the conning tower. I engaged the magnetic grapple on my harness, slamming into the slippery titanium plates with bone-jarring force. The magnet locked on with a loud metallic clank.

Above us, the submarine's automated warning lights flashed rhythmic, blinding pulses of amber through the rain. A high-pitched, piercing siren echoed across the open ocean from an external audio array:

*WARNING. RESTRICTED NAVAL WEAPON PLATFORM. UNAUTHORIZED APPROACH DETECTED. DEADLY FORCE AUTHORIZED.*

"Vance, the hatch is locked down from the inside with pneumatic seals!" Master Chief Reynolds yelled, clinging to the ladder rungs beside the sail. "We’ll need thermite to cut through the hinges!"

"Thermite will trigger the hull's automatic scuttling sensors!" I warned, pulling myself up the slick rungs against the howling wind. "Use the manual keyhole behind the maintenance panel!"

I climbed past him, gripping the freezing metal, and reached the recessed access panel marked with the faded stencil: *PROJECT TARTARUS — AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.*

Using a combat knife, I pried the rusted panel open. Inside was a heavy, corrosion-resistant brass tumbler mechanism. I pulled Ronald Vance’s key from my waterproof pouch, jammed it into the slot, and turned it hard to the right.

The tumblers ground together with fifty years of calcified salt, resisting.

"Come on, Grandfather," I grunted, throwing all my body weight into the turn.

With a loud hydraulic hiss, the pressure seals released. A cloud of stale, pressurized air from 1974 burst out, smelling of ozone, machine oil, and long-dead dreams. The heavy circular hatch popped upward six inches.

"Hatch is breached!" I signaled. "Reynolds, you're on point. Move, move, move!"
