Chapter 9 - The Last Warning

Daniel and Rebecca discovered that the company attempting to take Emma's inheritance was controlled through several layers of ownership.

The records pointed toward someone who had once been trusted by Daniel's father.

Before they could identify the person, Vanessa appeared outside Margaret's house.

She demanded to see Emma.

When Daniel refused, Vanessa screamed that he had destroyed her life.

“You made me look like a monster!”

“You smashed a cake onto a four-year-old's head!”

“She deserved discipline!”

Emma began crying inside the house.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You will never frighten her again.”

Vanessa's expression changed.

“You think this is about Emma? Your father built an empire on secrets. Claire found the wrong one, and now you're making the same mistake.”

Before Daniel could question her, Vanessa drove away.

That night, Robert Hale contacted Rebecca with new information. He had found a payment record connecting Andrew Cole to an account established by Daniel's father.

But before he could deliver the original document, Robert disappeared.

The next morning, Daniel received a package.

Inside was Robert's phone and a photograph of Emma sleeping.

A note read:

Withdraw the complaint. Return the evidence. Or lose the only family you have left.

Daniel refused to surrender.

Then Rebecca called.

“The emergency hearing has been moved forward. Vanessa's attorney has produced a document claiming you authorized her to control Emma's trust.”

Daniel recognized the signature immediately.

It was the same one on the mysterious paper from the night Claire died.

Someone had been preparing this scheme long before the birthday party.

And the next hearing could cost Daniel everything.

Could he expose the conspiracy before Vanessa took Emma away—or had his enemies already won?
