Chapter 25 - THE LAST LIE

The discovery of Lily Hale shattered what remained of Daniel’s understanding of his family.

Robert had never mentioned a first daughter. Margaret claimed she had never heard the name. Thomas Hale refused to discuss it until Harris confronted him with the trust documents.

Finally, Thomas confessed.

Lily had been born to Robert before he married Daniel’s mother. Her mother, a young woman named Sarah Hale, had died under suspicious circumstances. Robert feared a scandal would ruin his business, so he paid Thomas to arrange a secret adoption.

But Lily had never been declared dead by her adoptive family.

Someone had altered the records.

“Why would anyone erase her?” Daniel asked.

Thomas looked at the twins’ trust agreement.

“Because Lily had the original claim to the company before Claire’s grandmother changed the trust.”

Daniel felt sick.

Another child had been hidden. Another life had been sacrificed to protect the family’s wealth.

Harris discovered that Lily had lived under a different name until she vanished five years earlier. Her last known address belonged to a private care facility once funded by Northbridge.

Daniel went there with Evelyn.

The facility director initially denied knowing Lily, but when Daniel showed him the photograph, his face changed.

“She visited Claire shortly before your wife died,” he admitted. “She said someone was trying to kill her.”

“Where is she now?”

“I don’t know. She left a message for you.”

He handed Daniel a sealed envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Claire standing beside Lily. On the back, Claire had written:

If I die, do not trust the person who tells you I was afraid.

Daniel read the sentence twice.

Claire had never been afraid of Victor. She had confronted Robert, exposed Michael, and risked everything to find Evelyn.

Someone had killed her because she refused to stop.

Then Daniel noticed a second photograph inside the envelope.

It showed Claire entering a room at the hospital on the night she died.

The figure waiting inside wore a wedding ring identical to the one found in Emma’s bedroom.

Evelyn studied the photograph.

“That’s not Margaret.”

Daniel looked closer.

The woman’s face was partly visible.

He recognized the eyes.

His own mother, Elizabeth Reed.

But Elizabeth had died when Daniel was a teenager, years before Claire’s murder.

“That’s impossible,” he whispered.

The facility director shook his head.

“Claire told me the same thing. She said the woman everyone believed was dead had returned to silence her.”

Daniel’s phone rang.

A woman spoke in a calm, familiar voice.

“Hello, Daniel. I believe it’s time we talked.”

He could barely breathe.

“Who is this?”

A pause.

Then the woman answered.

“You’ve spent months searching for the person who killed your wife. But you’ve been looking at the wrong death.”

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What do you mean?”

“Your mother didn’t die when you were told she did.”

The call ended.

Evelyn stared at Daniel, terrified.

For the first time, he understood that the mystery surrounding Claire’s death might be only one piece of a much older crime.

And somewhere, a woman who should have been dead was still watching his family.
