Chapter 30 - THE SON WHO WAS NEVER BORN
Daniel confronted Robert with the hospital photographs.
His father finally admitted that Vivian had given birth on the same night as Elizabeth.
Someone had switched the babies' identification bracelets.
Margaret overheard their argument and slapped Daniel hard enough to split his lip.
“Your father built this family!” she screamed. “You owe him everything!”
Daniel wiped away the blood.
“I owe him nothing.”
Margaret lunged at him, but Robert restrained her.
Harris soon located Adrian Reed, who looked almost identical to Daniel.
Adrian revealed that he had been adopted after doctors declared him dead.
“I was the child they wanted erased,” he said. “You were the child they wanted to control.”
Daniel demanded to know who had ordered the switch.
Adrian placed an old photograph on the table. Margaret stood beside an incubator, holding a newborn.
Written underneath were the words:
ONE SON. ONE FUNERAL.
Before Adrian could explain, a gunshot shattered the window.
Vivian collapsed.
Daniel rushed to help her as Adrian disappeared through the rear exit.
With her final strength, Vivian gripped Daniel's wrist.
“Your brother is already inside Northbridge.”
She closed her eyes.
