Chapter 10 - The Girl Who Knew Too Much

The hearing began with Vanessa portraying herself as a devoted mother caught in a bitter marriage.

She presented photographs of Daniel's confrontation at the birthday party and accused him of violence.

Daniel admitted slapping her.

“I was wrong to do that,” he said. “But it doesn't change what she did to my daughter.”

Rebecca presented witness statements confirming that Vanessa had smashed the cake onto Emma's head. She also submitted the suspicious financial documents and requested an independent investigation.

The court ordered further review of the trust and arranged temporary protective measures while the allegations were investigated.

Daniel felt relief, but it was incomplete.

Vanessa had not confessed. The identity of the person behind Northbridge Holdings remained unknown.

After the hearing, she approached him in the courthouse corridor.

“You think you've won?”

“Stay away from Emma.”

Vanessa leaned closer.

“You should have listened to your father.”

Daniel grabbed her wrist, then immediately released it.

“What did he do?”

Vanessa smiled.

“Ask him.”

She walked away before Daniel could stop her.

That evening, Daniel returned to Margaret's house and discovered Emma's bedroom empty.

Her stuffed rabbit lay on the bed.

The window was open.

Margaret was crying in the hallway, while Kayla frantically searched the garden.

Daniel called the police.

Minutes later, his phone rang from an unknown number.

Emma's frightened voice came through.

“Daddy?”

“Emma! Where are you?”

“I don't know. There's a man here.”

Daniel's blood turned cold.

“Sweetheart, listen to me. Stay calm. Tell me what you can see.”

Before Emma could answer, a man's voice interrupted.

“Daniel Reed. You have something that belongs to us.”

“Bring my daughter home!”

“Return Claire's original recording. Then we'll discuss it.”

The call ended.

Daniel stared at the phone, unable to breathe.

The police began tracing the call while Rebecca contacted the investigators handling the financial case.

Then another message arrived.

It contained a photograph of Emma sitting beside a window.

Behind her stood a man Daniel recognized from an old family photograph.

His father's former business partner.

The man everyone had believed was dead.

Beneath the photograph were six words:

Your father knew I would return.

Daniel looked at Claire's final recording.

He finally understood that Vanessa might have been only one piece of a much larger conspiracy.

But Emma was missing, Robert had disappeared, and the man who might explain everything had resurfaced.

Daniel's phone rang again.

This time, the caller was Vanessa.

Her voice trembled.

“Daniel, listen carefully. I didn't take Emma.”

“Then tell me who did!”

A long silence followed.

Then Vanessa whispered, “The man who took her is the reason Claire died.”

The call abruptly ended.

Daniel rushed outside as police vehicles arrived.

Across the street, a dark blue sedan sat beneath the streetlight.

Its rear window lowered slowly.

A small hand appeared behind the glass.

Emma's pink ribbon dangled between two fingers.

Then the car disappeared into the night.

Daniel stood frozen, clutching the ribbon his daughter had worn on her birthday.

For the first time, he understood the terrible possibility that the truth might not save his family.

It might destroy whatever remained of it.

And somewhere in the darkness, someone who had escaped justice for years was waiting for Daniel to make one final choice.

Would Daniel save Emma by surrendering Claire's last secret—or would exposing the truth cost him his daughter forever?
