Chapter 1 - The Birthday Nightmare

Four-year-old Emma Reed stood beside her birthday cake, waiting for her father. When she accidentally smudged a pink frosting rose, her stepmother, Vanessa, grabbed the entire top tier and smashed it onto her head.
“There! Now everyone can see how special you are!” Vanessa sneered.
Her thirteen-year-old daughter, Kayla, laughed.
Emma stood frozen, frosting dripping down her pink dress. Nobody moved.
Then Daniel walked through the front door.
He saw his daughter trembling beneath the chandelier and slapped Vanessa across the face. She stumbled into the dessert table, destroying the remaining cake.
“Don't you ever touch my daughter again!” he roared.
Daniel wiped Emma's face as she whispered, “Daddy, was I bad?”
His heart shattered.
“No, sweetheart. You're the only innocent person in this house.”
He removed his wedding ring and dropped it beside the ruined cake.
“This marriage ends tonight.”
Vanessa's humiliation quickly turned to hatred.
“You think you can throw me away? You have no idea what I've been protecting you from.”
Daniel carried Emma upstairs, believing he had finally ended his family's nightmare.
But that night, an anonymous message appeared on his phone.
