Chapter 50 - THE MOTHER WHO NEVER DIED

Daniel returned to the family estate with Noah.

The house was empty.

Every photograph had been removed from the walls. Every drawer had been emptied. Even the family portraits had disappeared.

Only one object remained on the dining table.

A newborn's hospital bracelet.

The name was clearly visible.

LILY HALE.

Daniel picked it up.

A door creaked upstairs.

“Who's there?”

A woman's voice answered.

“Your daughter.”

Daniel ran up the stairs.

A young woman stood at the end of the corridor, holding a baby.

She had Claire's face, Emma's eyes, and the crescent-shaped scar from the silver key.

Daniel stopped breathing.

“Lily?”

She smiled sadly.

“You finally found me.”

He approached cautiously.

“Where have you been?”

“Where they wanted me.”

“Who?”

Lily looked toward the nursery.

“Everyone.”

Noah appeared behind Daniel.

He stared at the woman.

“That's impossible. Lily died seventeen years ago.”

Lily shook her head.

“They buried the wrong child.”

Daniel's legs weakened.

She explained that Richard had taken her as an infant and raised her under a false identity. When she discovered the truth, he threatened to kill the people she loved unless she remained hidden.

Daniel looked at the baby.

“Whose child is that?”

Lily hesitated.

“Mine.”

“Who is the father?”

Her expression changed.

“You already know him.”

Daniel stepped backward.

“No.”

Lily began crying.

“I'm sorry.”

A gunshot shattered the window.

Daniel threw himself over Lily and the baby as glass rained across the floor.

Noah rushed toward the stairs.

A masked attacker appeared in the doorway.

They fought violently, crashing into the banister. Noah landed a punch, but the attacker struck him across the face and kicked him down the stairs.

Daniel grabbed a fallen lamp and hit the attacker from behind.

The man collapsed.

Daniel tore off the mask.

Richard.

Blood ran from his forehead.

He smiled.

“You should have stayed away.”

Daniel punched him.

“You destroyed my family!”

Richard laughed through the blood.

“Your family was destroyed before you were born.”

Police sirens sounded outside.

Richard looked toward the window.

Then he pulled a small device from his pocket and pressed a button.

The house lights went out.

When they returned, Richard was gone.

So was Lily.

Only the baby remained in Daniel's arms.

Noah struggled to his feet.

“Where did she go?”

Daniel looked at the open window.

On the floor lay Lily's necklace.

Inside the pendant was a photograph of Daniel as a newborn, held by a woman he had never seen before.

On the back was a message:

YOUR FATHER IS STILL ALIVE.

Daniel stared at the photograph.

His father had supposedly died decades ago.

But the handwriting belonged to Thomas Hale.

His phone rang.

A distorted voice whispered, “Daniel, if you want your daughter back, come alone.”

“Who is this?”

“The man who created your family.”

Daniel's blood ran cold.

“Thomas?”

The voice laughed.

“Welcome to the final chapter.”

The call ended.

Noah looked at the baby.

The child's eyes opened.

Silver.

Then a small crescent-shaped mark appeared beneath her chin.

Daniel slowly backed away.

The baby began crying.

A message arrived from an unknown number.

SUBJECT SIX ACTIVATED.

Daniel looked toward the dark staircase.

Someone was standing there.

A woman wearing Claire's face.

She raised a gun.

“Give me the baby.”

Daniel held the child closer.

“Who are you?”

The woman smiled.

“The only mother this family has ever needed.”

She pulled the trigger.

May you like

The screen went black.

And somewhere beneath the house, a newborn began to cry.
