Chapter 6 - The Man in the Dark
Daniel arranged the meeting with Rebecca and the authorities, refusing to walk into the trap alone.
At an abandoned office building, Robert Hale confessed that he had been paid to follow Claire before her death.
“Who hired you?” Daniel demanded.
“Someone connected to Northbridge Holdings.”
“Was Vanessa involved?”
“I saw her meeting Andrew. But I never saw anyone deliberately cause the accident.”
Robert revealed that he had seen another vehicle near the crash site. He had remained silent because he feared the people paying him.
Before he could explain further, a stranger rushed into the corridor.
Daniel escaped with the help of the officers waiting outside, but the stranger vanished.
Robert agreed to cooperate with investigators.
Daniel returned to Margaret's house, hoping Emma was safe.
Instead, Margaret told him Vanessa had arrived claiming Daniel had authorized her to take the little girl.
Emma was shaking.
“She said you didn't want me anymore, Daddy.”
Daniel pulled her into his arms.
“I will never stop loving you.”
Then Rebecca called with devastating news.
Vanessa had filed a complaint accusing Daniel of threatening her and unlawfully withholding Emma.
She was turning the legal system against him.
Moments later, Daniel received a photograph of a document bearing his signature, dated the night Claire died.
Beneath it was a chilling message:
May you like
Tomorrow, everyone will learn what you did to your wife.
Had someone forged Daniel's signature—or was there a secret about Claire's death that even he didn't remember?
