Chapter 54 - THE LAST HALEDaniel reached for his daughter, but Claire stepped back.
“I can't give her to you.”
Thomas suddenly attacked Claire, grabbing her arm and forcing her toward the hidden tunnel.
Daniel punched him, knocking him against the control station.
Thomas retaliated with a brutal blow from his cane. Daniel fell, and the guards dragged him across the floor.
Noah, barely conscious, fired his weapon at the ceiling. The distraction allowed Daniel to break free.
“Run!” Noah shouted.
Daniel refused to leave him.
Noah smiled sadly.
“I'm sorry I betrayed you.”
He turned toward Thomas and fired, striking his shoulder again.
The guards shot back.
Noah collapsed.
Daniel screamed as his oldest friend died before his eyes.
Thomas pressed a button on his watch.
The lights went out.
When they returned, Thomas lay dead beside the control station.
Claire had disappeared.
Both newborns were gone.
Daniel stood beside Noah’s body, clutching the silver key.
His phone vibrated.
ONE HALE MUST SURVIVE.
Another message appeared.
CHOOSE WHICH CHILD LIVES BEFORE MIDNIGHT.
Daniel entered the tunnel and found a door opening at its far end.
A man stepped into the light.
He had Daniel’s face.
“Who are you?” Daniel demanded.
The stranger smiled.
“I'm the original.”
Then he slammed the door.
