Chapter 95 - THE LETTER FROM MY MOTHER
We found the letter inside an old safety deposit box.
The bank manager placed it in my hands.
It was sealed twenty-six years earlier.
My name was written on the envelope.
Not Emily Reed.
Emily.
Just Emily.
I opened it.
My mother's handwriting filled the page.
My hands trembled.
“My beautiful girl,
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from the truth.
I am sorry.
You will hear many versions of what happened to me.
Some will say I ran.
Some will say I died.
Some will say I betrayed the family.
Believe none of them.
I discovered what The Circle had become.
Your grandfather wanted power.
Your father wanted control.
Richard wanted something worse.
He wanted obedience.
I tried to stop them.
I failed.
But before I disappeared, I made one decision.
I separated the inheritance.
The money went one way.
The information went another.
And the authority went to you.
Not because you were born into the family.
Because you were the only person I trusted to end it.
If Noah is with you, protect him.
He was never meant to inherit the darkness.
He was meant to inherit what comes after it.
A life without secrets.
A childhood without fear.
A father who finally understands what he almost lost.
And a mother who knows she was loved.
Whatever you do, Emily, don't become me.
Don't spend your life fighting shadows.
Turn on the light.
Love,
Mom.”
I couldn't read anymore.
The letter blurred.
Noah touched my shoulder.
“Mom?”
I folded it.
“I'm okay.”
He hugged me.
Julian stood across the room.
He didn't say anything.
He didn't need to.
For the first time, I understood what my mother had wanted.
Not revenge.
Not power.
Freedom.
Then the safety deposit box made a clicking sound.
A second compartment opened.
Inside was a tiny key.
And beneath it, another note.
THE PERSON YOU TRUSTED LEAST KNOWS WHERE RICHARD IS.
I looked at Julian.
He looked at me.
Neither of us spoke.
May you like
Because we both knew exactly who it meant.
Victoria.
