Chapter 43 - MY FATHER'S VOICE

I couldn't breathe.
“Who is this?”
“You know.”
“No.”
“You've spent your whole life being told I'm dead.”
My hands trembled.
“Where are you?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Why?”
“Because they're still looking for me.”
“Who?”
“Your grandfather was right.”
I looked at him.
He was standing across the room.
My father continued.
“Elliot wasn't the one controlling everything.”
“Who was?”
Silence.
Then:
“Your grandmother.”
I froze.
“My grandmother died before I was born.”
“That is what they told you.”
My grandfather stepped forward.
“Emily, hang up.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
He looked terrified.
My father heard him.
“Because he knows I'm telling the truth.”
I demanded:
“Where is my mother?”
“Safe.”
“Where is Noah's trust?”
“Safe.”
“Where are you?”
A pause.
“Closer than you think.”
The call ended.
I turned toward my grandfather.
“Tell me the truth.”
He didn't answer.
My mother entered the room.
She saw my face.
“What happened?”
I whispered:
“Dad called.”
She stopped.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then she sat down.
“He's alive.”
My heart shattered.
“You knew?”
She nodded.
“I knew.”
“Why?”
“Because I helped him disappear.”
“From whom?”
May you like
She looked toward the window.
“Your grandmother.”
