Chapter 38 - THE TRAP

Everything suddenly made sense.

The insults.

The public humiliation.

The way Julian had been pushed to denounce me.

The way his new wife had encouraged everyone to laugh.

They wanted me angry.

They wanted me ashamed.

They wanted me to sign away my rights.

But they hadn't expected Noah.

They hadn't expected the box.

And they certainly hadn't expected me to fight back.

My grandfather handed me a document.

“Your ex-husband was supposed to sign this.”

Julian looked at it.

“What is it?”

“A transfer agreement.”

His face hardened.

“They wanted me to transfer Emily's trust.”

“Yes.”

“To whom?”

My grandfather pointed at the final page.

Elliot Vance.

Julian looked sick.

“I never signed it.”

“I know.”

“Then how did they get my signature?”

My grandfather didn't answer.

Julian stared at him.

“Someone forged it.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“Your new wife's family.”

Silence.

Julian closed his eyes.

“So the wedding was designed to destroy Emily's reputation.”

“Yes.”

“And then take the trust.”

“Yes.”

I looked at my grandfather.

“Why did you let them do it?”

“I didn't.”

He looked at me.

“I was trying to expose them.”

Then a voice came from behind us.

“You should have tried harder.”

We turned.

Elliot stood at the warehouse entrance.

He was holding a gun.
