Chapter 35 - MY GRANDFATHER
I couldn't speak.
Julian took the phone.
“Prove it.”
The voice laughed softly.
“You're still protecting her.”
Julian froze.
My grandfather continued:
“Good.”
I grabbed the phone.
“Where are you?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Where is my mother?”
“She is with me.”
“Is she safe?”
“Yes.”
I closed my eyes.
“Why did you let us believe you were dead?”
“Because someone wanted me dead.”
“Who?”
“Everyone who wanted the trust.”
“Why didn't you come back?”
“Because I couldn't.”
“That's not an answer.”
“It is the only answer you have right now.”
I became angry.
“You let my mother suffer.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“Yes.”
“You let me marry into a family that was trying to steal from me.”
Silence.
Then:
“I never expected Julian to love you.”
I looked at Julian.
My grandfather continued.
“That changed everything.”
Julian stepped closer.
“What do you mean?”
“I expected him to betray her.”
Julian's face hardened.
“I never did.”
“I know.”
“Then why did you keep testing me?”
“Because I had no choice.”
I whispered:
“Where is Elliot?”
My grandfather's voice became cold.
“He is coming for Noah.”
I looked at my son.
“When?”
