Chapter 54 - THE NAME

We locked every door.

Michael placed the envelope on the table.

Inside was a single photograph.

A man standing outside a government building.

My father pointed to him.

“This is the person who controlled the network.”

I stared at the photograph.

I didn't recognize him.

But Julian did.

“That's Senator Andrew Cole.”

My father nodded.

I looked at Julian.

“You know him?”

“Everyone does.”

“What does he have to do with our family?”

Michael opened another document.

“Everything.”

Cole had been connected to shell companies.

Secret accounts.

Illegal property transfers.

And one company had a familiar name.

Vance Holdings.

My grandfather closed his eyes.

Michael looked at him.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“You knew enough to make me disappear.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“You destroyed my life.”

“I saved it.”

“You separated me from my daughter.”

My grandfather looked at me.

“I know.”

Michael's voice softened.

“I watched Emily grow up from a distance.”

I stared at him.

“You were there?”

“Sometimes.”

“Why didn't you come to me?”

“Because Cole's people were watching you.”

I began crying.

“You could have told me.”

“I wanted to.”

He reached for my hand.

“But I chose your safety.”

Then he placed the final document on the table.

“Cole didn't just control the money.”

“He controlled people.”

“Judges.”

“Bankers.”

“Police officers.”

“And one person inside our family.”

I looked at him.

“Who?”

May you like

Michael whispered:

“Julian's father.”
