Chapter 62 - ELENA

My father told us the story slowly.

Elena had met him when they were young.

They had fallen in love.

Then Eleanor discovered she was pregnant.

“She didn't approve of Elena,” my father said.

“Why?”

“She came from outside the family.”

I almost laughed.

“So my grandmother destroyed her life?”

My father looked down.

“She tried.”

“But Elena survived.”

“Yes.”

“She gave birth to me.”

“Yes.”

“Then she disappeared.”

“Three days later.”

“Why?”

My father hesitated.

“She discovered something.”

“What?”

“The original trust.”

I frowned.

“Why would that matter?”

“Because Elena learned that Eleanor planned to use you.”

“For the trust?”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“For leverage.”

My mother spoke.

“Eleanor wanted control over your father.”

I listened.

“By controlling me.”

“Yes.”

“So Elena ran.”

“She took you.”

“But I was found.”

“Not immediately.”

My father showed me another document.

A hospital record.

My name wasn't Emily Reed.

It was Baby Girl Morgan.

I stared.

“What?”

“You were placed under another identity.”

“Who changed it?”

“Your mother.”

I looked at the woman who raised me.

She nodded.

“Your biological mother asked me to take you.”

“Why?”

“Because she knew they were coming.”

“Who?”

“Eleanor's people.”

I felt a chill.

“Where did Elena go?”

My father looked at the floor.

“She left you with us.”

“Why didn't she come back?”

“She tried.”

I froze.

“When?”

“Years later.”

“Where is she now?”

My father didn't answer.

I already knew.

May you like

“She died.”

He nodded.
