Chapter 58 - THE HIDDEN ROOM

The courthouse holding cell was cold.

I sat alone.

Then a guard approached.

“Mrs. Reed?”

“Yes?”

“Someone left this for you.”

He handed me a small key.

I recognized it.

The same symbol was engraved on the first box.

A V.

I looked up.

“Who gave you this?”

The guard walked away.

I turned the key over.

A number was engraved beneath the symbol.

909.

I realized something.

Account 909 wasn't a bank account.

It was a room.

I waited until the courthouse changed shifts.

Then the door opened.

Julian walked in.

“How did you get here?”

“Your grandfather pulled every legal string he had.”

He helped me out.

“We have ten minutes.”

“Where are we going?”

“Basement.”

We reached the old archive.

A metal door stood at the end.

The key opened it.

Inside was a small room.

There was no money.

No computers.

Only a wall of files.

Julian picked one up.

His father's name.

Another.

My grandfather.

Another.

Michael.

Then we found one marked:

ANDREW COLE.

Inside were recordings.

Photographs.

Bank records.

And a confession.

Cole had ordered the entire scheme.

But the final recording revealed something worse.

A voice said:

“The trust is useless unless Emily disappears.”

I recognized the voice.

My grandmother.

Eleanor.

But she wasn't alone.

A second voice answered.

“Then make it look like an accident.”

Julian stared at me.

“Who is that?”

I pressed play.

The voice became clear.

May you like

My heart stopped.

It was Julian's.
